An exercise in divergent thinking
    #4136276 - 05/05/05 05:20 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

eMotion inspired my to start this thread with his "444"="a perfect set of fours".

The exercise itself: think of ways to calculate or otherwise determine 14 x 14.

I do:
14 x 10 (=140) + 14 x 4 (=56)
and 140 + 56 = 196

That's what you were asking right?

Yeah it is. But don't limit yourself. Post as many as you can think of. :smirk:

2^7+2^6+2^2=128+64+4=196
13^2+3^3=169+27=196

there are a lot (infinite?) of ways to derive 196.

Alright, perhaps I should refine the question. I'm looking for answers that will fit into a formula or another STRUCTURED mode of thinking. A method that will work in any multiplication (or perhaps just in multiplications of numbers between 11 and 19, inclusive). Randomly adding numbers together isn't the idea.

One example is:

The difference between a quadrate (?) n? and (n+1)? is 2n + 1. For example, the difference between 0? and 1? = 2x0 + 1. The difference between 1? and 2? = 2x1 + 1. And so on.
Applied to 14?, this means you add 2x13 + 1 to 169.

Yeah, that's one (pun intended).
