Help with ID
    #4135069 - 05/04/05 11:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

hey, i just found some mushrooms today. i cant get a pic up so ill try to explain them so i can possibly get an ID. they were growing in 2 small clusters, have a white stem, looks like its blueing a little bit, the caps are bell shaped, and have some bluing around the bottom of the cap. you cap see the little lines in the caps from the gills, they have a hollow stem, and the gills look chocolate colored. the shroom is still spore spinting now but ill tell you guys the color when its done. the cap is dark yellow at the top and gets lighter as it goes down, and when i touch the gills i get like, black spores all over my fingers. could someone maybe tell my if there good to eat or not? thanks.
Also the stuff that comes off on my fingers is like ink.

Your description, other than the blueing, is a reasonable description of the very common Coprinus micaceus. Try looking at them again and ask yourself if the blue you see is more optimism and wishful thinking than actual. Lots of people have mistaken a darkening of tissue to be blueing, and it has even resulted in some potentially lethal poisonings. In my experience, when a mushroom turns blue the blue tends to be vivid and obvious, not at all subtle.

In particular, your mention of stuff like ink suggests this ID. The genus Coprinus are known collectively as "Ink Caps".

Coprinus micaceus is an edible mushroom, but only while the gills are still pure white. Once they turn black with ripening spores they are considered inedible by everybody I know. They have a mild flavor and tend to be pretty small, but they usually grow in big enough clusters that you can pick enough to make up for their size.

Happy mushrooming!

ok thanks. i just got the print back, and it was like a dark purple to chocolate color, about the same color as the gills. the inky stuff is also very sticky. so i guess these are poisonous now? if so that sucks, i picked like a QP in 1 spot.

Probably not poisonous, just too nasty to eat.

Happy mushrooming!

Google Image Search is your friend. Most mushrooms have lots of photos out on the internets.

Happy mushrooming!

Coprinus spores should be black, not dark purple chocolate.
