Is my Horse Shit Good?
    #4134465 - 05/04/05 09:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I just spawned some colonized WBS to some horse poo i got from a guys farm i know. The poo was kind of moist, and dark brown from the recent rain. It wasn't really in clumps, but crumbled up almost like soil. It had lots of fiberous strands in it still, and husks from oats. It didn't smell bad at all, just basically like dirt. The reason it wasn't in clumps is because he tills up and spreads out his manure with a tractor. I was jut wondering if this sounds like it's good, or could it be too old? I wouldn't think it would be too old, because the newer poo is all at the top of his pile.

It does kind of look like dark potting soil. It's kind of textured like that too. Is this bad? The poop can't be that old because all the poo from the horse stalls is put in this pile everyday. So the poo has to be decently fresh if near the top because it gets added too almost daily. It's basically a pile of tilled up spread out horse poo outside. I know it's been naturally leached, i just hope it's not too composted.

Actually, you might not have as good a find as you think. You said it comes out of the stalls. I have worked with horses and we always used to throw sawdust on the fresh piles in the stalls until we could clean it up. Does it look anything like this?

I encountered this problem when I went to where horses were boarded and found that this is quite a common practice. See if you can walk the field where the horses are and pick your own. Try to get stuff that looks something like this. Good Luck.

yeah there is probably some saw dust in there w/ it.  I already spawned some of my WBS to it in an outdoor bed.  I guess ill see what happens.  I know for sure there was mostly poop and not saw dust in the mix.  I don't think saw dust is thrown on the piles, but i know some saw dust is kind of mixed in with it when it gets scooped out.  Will a little saw dust screw my mushrooms?  Id say the mix is at least 75% poo to 25% saw dust.  Maybe even more poo than that.

My only other option is gathering some old cow patties from random fields around me.  I may do a bed with that too.

No I doubt it. Check out some of the grow logs.. they involve sawdust. It's not bad. People have used it before and you might be fine. Then again .. i might be wrong.

Hey Sammy, haven't seen the logs you're talking about, but I know some wood lovers are done in sawdust. Or some type. Just read a recipe for a sawdust based type in Stamets book. Maybe that was what you saw. I got some like that, with sawdust, and was told it wasn't the best.

Our lovely lady  :heart:HippyChick  is quite correct. You want the dried nuggets & muffins with a high fiber consistancy, that have no smell - other than earthy.

look at it this way. Sawdust is most often fir/pine & contains pitch resins, which are not a good thing to have in a substrate. Moreover, the sawdust is usualy not well degraded, meaning that myc cannot digest it. So, it is simply a filler, with detrimental attributes.

Almost anything a horse would EAT, once digested makes for good fungi/fuel.

Horses would NOT EAT SAWDUST.

But, it should still do okay, just not OPTIMAL.

it will still grow with saw dust I have collected it from a place that throws wood chips and saw dust on it, I tried and to stay away from the piles with a lot of huge wood chips in but I still got some in the mix but it still colonized fine.
