Friends computer problem?
    #4129889 - 05/03/05 09:13 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

About every minute or so, his computer freezes for about 10 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas on what he should do? We know his computers life is now limited.

could be a ram instability problem, or maybe there is spyware that is causing the comp to freeze. has he installed any new programs lately?

I don't know.

He's done numerous scans and hasn't found anything.

I've seen this before. It's (likely) a problem with your network card and/or drivers. The card asserts a line on the bus and clogs everything up for a few seconds.

Take the card out and see if the problem persists. If the problem goes away, reinstall the card and the IP stack. That'll fix it.

Good luck!

If it's a Windows machine I would start up into "Safe Mode" (press F8 imediately after post screen or after you turn the unit on if it does not display a post screen & select "safe mode" from the texted based menu). This starts the unit with minimal drivers & processes. Alot of things will not work like cd mech, networking (unless selected), 3rd party programs that normally run in the backround at startup, etc. The display will look kind of generic also because it is not using its normal driver instead it is using a standard vga driver. If the unit does not fail in safe mode then the problem is probably related to software (drivers, corrupted program, too many processes running in the backround, corrupted or improper driver, virus, spyware, adware, excessive traffic on the network). I've found that you usually have to use multiple virus, adware, spyware removal tools to get rid of everything. Also they must be kept up to date or they won't do much good. If the unit does fail in safe mode then it could possibly be system software or hardware. Also if there was any hardware or software installed just before the problem started you may want to undo those things to see if the problem goes away.
If it is an Apple computer you can start it up with with minimal processes running by holding down the "shift" key imediately after the unit is powered on & releasing it when you see "extensions off" in OS 9 or before environment or when you see "safe boot" in the OS X environment & just use the same analogy to determine if it is software or hardware.

I suggest taking out and inserting the gfx and sound card, i had this problem a few times, it was down to my faulty graphix card, i had to replace it.

For me, freezes usually only occur from overheating. After time your CPU's heatsink gets very clogged with dust and this is usually the biggest contributor to overheating, I would get a program to check cpu temp.
