My Baby Vs. My Babies.. tough decision
    #4133939 - 05/04/05 07:32 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Well, This is my first grow. I am in a long distance relationship and I am planning to go visit my girlfriend this weekend. 11 days ago I birthed one cake and spawned a couple of shoebox size trays. Yesterday my first pins shot up and now I'm finding it very hard, despite how much I want to see my girl, to leave my first EVER pins here for four days with no air exhange or misting. The idea has even crossed my mind to load my little 1 cake rubbermaid terrarium up in the trunk and take her with me, but that just seems a bit reckless. But I never speed more than 5 mph the whole trip because I usually have a couple grams of weed on me to smoke, and I have never had a cop ask me any suspicious questions. I don't look like a stoner or anything. Even though I know it's risky there's a part of me that wants to convince myself to do it. So basically this thread is just for you guys to tell me how retarded I am and give me some ideas of what to do while I'm away so I don't suffocate the poor things. I've got the more exciting trays that will be ready to case when I get home, but missing his first fruits ever is just too much for a n00b. Any and all advice/suggestions/insults are welcome and appreciated.

Yeah, I guess that would be a good idea. Buying an aquarium pump for 1 cake would be a bit much, but I'm planning on using them in the terrarium my casings go in, so I guess I wouldn't be wasting anything.

Can someone link me to the excerpt from Stamet's book with the timeframe/ideal conditions for each stage (incubation, spawn run, pinning etc)? I can't find it but I remember seeing it posted on here several times. Basically what I'm wondering is how much am I going to miss being gone for 4 days starting 3 days after pinning began? It really kills me to leave them all by their lonesome. :frown:

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Who knew it would be in the FAQ?! Total newb for ya.

Well, 5-8 days so when I get back the first flush should be ending. I guess that's not bad timing, but I hate the thought of not being able to run in there and look at my cake and drool over it every hour or so.

So do you guys think it's totally out of the question to secure it in the trunk? I never smoke in my car, I just have a tiny bit for us to smoke while I'm there. I can't imagine any probable cause a cop could get to search my car, but they do have very resourceful imaginations.

The only problem you would haveis if you got pulled over by a K9 cop. Because if they used the dog it would smell the weed and thats your probable cause.

Actually I only have about one bowl full left and I doubt I will have the will power to abstain. But, I guess a NARC dog would hit on my pain meds. But, what are the chances of someone who is not speeding getting pulled over in the first place, and THEN the chances of it being a K9. I can't think of a single time I've ever seen a State Trooper/Highway Patrol K9 unit. Seriously, if I have so much as a stem on me I drive absolutely 100% by the book. This is under any circumstances, not just when I'm on long drives.

I don't know.. I realize it's a bad idea, but I don't want to miss it.

Its a bad idea.  seeing that flush isn't worth going to jail. Too many things can happen i.e flat tire accident when your trunk could be open with a cop. Don't take any unnecessary risks like that. You can always grow more!

Enjoy

and also, im not sure how you can keep everything stable in your trunk, usually there is a temp diff in the trunk and all that bumping around cant be good for those pins.? Id almost think it would be 2 much of a hassle.

Yeah, I've thought about that too. I won't have a problem putting enough things around it so it won't slide, but you never know what might happen when I hit bumps.

Anyway, I'm putting this idea to rest.

About the cakes, though, I have noticed my cakes aren't fluffy like most others I've seen. I dunked for 12 hours in the fridge and rolled in verm. The RH has been fairly constant around 92-95% but my temperature has fluctuated some. I guess it's gotten down as low as 68 at night and up to 80 for a short period of time. It hasn't seemed to affect pinning, though. I counted 12 pins just on the top of the cake, and there are several on the sides.

Any opinions on how it's doing? The strain is KSSS. I guess it was in the incubator about a week after 100% colonization. It's not very fluffy, more like a brick of mycelium.

Here's some crappy pictures:

What do you guys think? You can only see the big ones in the picture, but there are 15 + pins just on the top.

Will an airstone inside a half pint jar of water be too much air exchange for a terrarium this small? I know you can't have too much air exchange, but will it cause the humidity to drop too much?

drill a couple 1-2 inch round holes in the sides of your terrarium. Then pack them w/ polyfill. Keep a fan running on one side of the terrarium to keep air moving through the holes. Make sure and wet your perlite real good before you leave and it should be fine for the 4-5 days you'll be gone.

Shroomies look great Snoo!

The fluffy growth you have seen is caused from high moisture. Your "brick-like" cake looks to be doing just fine! Good call on the dunking. Have you told any real close friends about your mushroom project? If so maybe they could come over to help you out. That's what I have to do this weekend. I am sure my roommate will do just fine, but I am still concerned about my baby boomies! Best of Luck!

Ok..I got an aquarium pump, hose, and two airstones today. Two questions:

1. This one has two ports. Is it a bad thing if I just let one of the holes blow air out? I don't see why, but just wanted to make sure. Do I need to hook this up and put it in something outside of the terrarium?

2. I'm heating up my soldering iron to make a hole for the tube to go in. I don't have any polyfill, do I need to have a filtered hole to let air out? The lid is pretty snug, but I don't think it's airtight.

If I can get some quick answers on this I'd be grateful. I need to get on the road soon. Thanks everyone!

1. You can use the extra one to create more airflow if you want, or you could leave it, your call
2. If you really will have pressure buildup in there, air will only be escaping, so nothing will be getting in. You will need some hole to passively let air out, otherwise you strain your pump. Do you plan to have it on 24/7 or just part of the time?

Enjoy your trip, dont bring them with you, heh heh.

No your bin probably isnt airtight. Just make one hole for the airpump and see how it goes.
My bet is you will be fine.

A lot of talk here in this thread but the answer is simple and has been said: airpump.
