They're probably only growing from the bottom because thats where the moisture is.  What is your setup like? RH? Misting? Air exchange? Are your cakes sitting on a lid, or directly on some perlite or something?... GL bro :stoned:

what happens if they are sitting directly on the perlite?

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Well your setup sounds fine.  Do you have any way to measure RH?  I say continue with what you're doing, maybe mist a little more, but not directly on the cakes.  Have some patience and you should see more pins in the future... GL bro :stoned:

Sitting directly on the perlite, they'll absorb the water and will most likely pin only from the bottome, where the most moisure is in the cake.  Alot of people have good success putting their cakes directly on perlite, but I prefer not to.  It also can cause contam issues if your cakes start sucking up too much water... so what are the odds the perlite could overdry the cakes? slim to none?
