    #4126913 - 05/03/05 08:13 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

A few morels from last weekend.

This is the first year that I have found blacks and yellows growing together under the same tree. Its nice to see the big yellows ones are finally out.

Wow that mushroom is plenty for a whole meal LOL. Thats nuts.

What does the temp need to be like to start looking, and should i look after it rains only, or could they be up at anytime. We get a really wet april here so its like sweaty and humid and yucky outside most of the time in the early summer.

Nice find, BUT there are no black morels in that pic. Those are all the same. The darker/lighter colors are due to temps and sunlight.
Blacks are quite a bit different.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Sweet jebus Dan.

That one is huge.

And black and yellow morels all of those sizes in one day?

I'm envious. You bastard!

Actually those were found over three days of hunting, and my dad found most of them. I did find that big one though. They were all delicious.

Hmmm...

I just figured the little black ones were "Black Morels" and the big yellow ones were "Yellow Morels".

There seems to be some disagreement among the experts as to how many different species of morels exists. Some say there are many distinct species, and other say there are only three: Black, Yellow, and Half-Free.

In the past we have usually found the little black ones a few weeks before the big yellow ones come up; this year however the two come up together.

Until a definitive consensus forms among the experts, I will continue to call the little black ones "Black Morels" and the big yellow ones "Yellow Morels". I don't know about the medium sized gray ones.

.................................

Tahoe,

Morel season will be over by the end of May. :frown:

But, Oyster and Gym season will be started by then.

Whenever the leaves start to come out is a good time to start looking for Morels.

The last time I attended a lecture by Dr Nancy Weber (she's the authority on these) she said that we were better off for now using common names than trying to apply scientific names. They're currently doing DNA research on morels and the false morels and she says things are going to end up being stirred up quite a bit when they get finished. She's going to be lecturing here in Denver this June, so we'll see how things have progressed - it's been about a year and a half since the last one.

Happy mushrooming!
