Hi everyone:), I have noticed that many of you are having trouble finding pure calcium carbonate lime.

The main products available in garden houses are dolomitic lime. Which by the way is VERY bad to use because of the high magnesium content (which can slow or even prevent mushroom pinning and formation from your casing layer.

There are many ways to get calcium carbonate (crushed oyster shells, egg shells, chalk, aglime, etc). Here is a way to get pure calcium carbonate with out any work or processing. (The same used at professional labs).

Go to PetSmart or any animal food warehouse that has an isle for reptile related supplies. Look for or ask for Calci-sand, or reptile sand. You will find several types from regular dessert sand, to sand made up of calcium carbonate, called "calci-sand". This is the one you want. The ones made of 100% calcium carbonate. For about 6 dollars you get 5 pounds of pure calcium carbonate, which goes a loooong way....well, depending on how BIG your lab is  LOL.

My friend finds that it neutralizes with out having to be crushed further, however you may want to crush some to powder (its easy get a hammer:))
Then you can follow TMC recipe for a casing layer :
Coarse peat: 4 parts
Limestone Flour: 1 part ( use a hammer to crush the calci sand or a mortar and pestle)
Limestone Grit:  1/2 part ( use a window screen, filter the big particles out, use that as the grit)
Water: Approximately 2-2 1/4 parts
My friend loves this recipe for her casings.
Attached you will find a pic of calci sand.
Its very common in Pet stores, or you can also order it online.
Now for those of you that want a fine powder without any work (hammer) or are unsure of using as is, then get some "jurassi-cal" reptile calcium supplement. It is a very fine powder and is pure calcium carbonate. bluhoney

Hey whats happenin girl!

Thanks for the heads up. I've been wondering if that stuff is any good or not.
Seems like somebody posted something about it not too long ago.

Just picked up a 50lb bag of limestone flour at Lowe's today. Total Mg content is 4.0%.
Think that's too high??

Hi , Does your bag on the back say dolomitic anywhere in the fine print. If so, donnot use it. My friend is pretty sure that you have dolomitic lime flour, because she went to lowes looking and only found the "d" word LOL lime. Really .3 is about the max magnesium if any at all you want. Your stating 4.0, that is waaaay to much. Its hard to find Calcite lime, most lime is dolomitic at lowes and other large farm stores.

It doesn't say anything about dolomitic. Just pulverized limestone. I've used it at a 1:4 lime:peat ratio before and got pretty decent results.

But I know you know what your talking about. If .3 is the max, then I'm dumping this crap and getting some of that calci-sand.

Pure calcium carbonate is what were after anyway.

And I was just at the petstore earlier today

They sure are!

I went back today and found a cheaper off-brand calcium sand bedding.

Pure calcium carbonate.

Grinds to flour nicely in the ol' coffee grinder
