FLA: Lactarius fragilis "Candy Caps" (PIC)
    #4129020 - 05/03/05 08:07 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

These were found today underneath a Live Oak tree.

I think they are Lactarius fragilis. ?

Mushrooms Demystified lists them as good edibles,
and nicknames them Candy Caps.

As the book describes:
I fried the caps up and they smelled slightly like "maple surup".

We wont be eating any of these,
But its always fun to identify and play around.

Keep shroomin
GG

yep, here's more what the book says:

"If just a few candy caps are sauteed, their odor will permeate the entire house and linger for days. Stranger still, when eaten in quantity they imbue one's perspiration and bodily exudates with the unmistakable aroma of maple syrup-"

As the caps dry their smell should become unmistakable. I've left specimens in my kitchen for weeks, just enjoying their fragrance.

Very nice. They look like them. An important characteristic is that the latex must *not* stain yellowish.

Happy mushrooming!

Send a bunch of spore prints to the people in the edible growing forum...
Or get a patent on the genetics and kill the market with a new strain in the produce/breakfast section. Maple-shroomie pancake syrup..... Mmmm...
I want to try these so bad.

"Might even be a non sugar sweetener in them that could be a nutritional breakthrough with multibillion dollar contracts with Pepsi and Coca-Cola" is what I thought in a Gonzoish way. How could it be? Much too easy. Look at those snearing as ... (you have to fill in the rest, I'm no H.S.T.)
I'm serious though, if you can do the labwork find out the chemical composite of the sweetener that is less fattening than sugar you are set. Get a real good lawyer and research company to back you, could be your ticket. But most of all don't forget where the idea came from(PM me for my bank acct. routing #)
