Bulk With 55 Gallon Tub???
    #4127510 - 05/03/05 11:46 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

When using a 55 gallon tub if someone was going to have a 5 in. thick substrate layer how many quart size jars would be needed to spawn. When looking for heavy yields?

the first thing that you would need to think about would be to figure out how much substrate you were going to use,
then you could calculate how much spawn you would need.

you do realize that spawning means to mix a smaller amount (25%) of colonized spawn (wbs brf rye)with a larger amount of pasteurized substrate.... right?

dimensions might help people give you a better estimate, especially if you would like to measure substrate to be at a 5 in. depth

if you wanted to spawn something that size, you'd need a high spawn ratio (lots and lots of spawn) and prob about 25 large mycobags full o shit... but i would guess it would contam

Well the container would be standard rubbermaid container and would have about 20lbs of horsepoo/straw mix. A goal would be of 5lbs dry mushies.

You will need spawn at least equal to 1/4 (+) the volume of the substrate. I would suggest using smaller trays. If something goes wrong with a huge tub, the whole thing goes bad.

Using 12 or 16 quart trays gives you better control of the grow.

well i would use at lest 12 qt jars more spawn = faster colenized substraight = less chance of contams

If to use 20lbs of Tennesse Studs prepasturized mix could you store an open package or have to use it all at once?

use it all at once and i dont think that 20lbs is enough for a 55gallon tub at 6" deep

order a few hundred pounds of the substraight and get a 10 or 55gallon tubs going

Get your SPAWN going. See if you can master that, then worry about ratio's, substrates & casing covers. For substrate, try to find FREE weathered h/poo.

Yeah theres plenty of healthy spawn going. And have access to weathered h/poo but It seems like it would be too smelly pasturizing it. And I cant think of a way it pasturize large amounts when all you have is a stove top. Wouldn't want to use the oven, plan on cooking in it later

yeah straw is a million times cheaper than that pre pasturized poop and almost as good and it has a sweat smell when its paturizeing

Does straw pasturize the same way as manure? And does it give off about the same yields? Wanna take a step up from casing

there's a couple/few members around that have used straw for some time, and are recently converting to H :poop:
this is no coincidence; h poo is very resistant to contaminants, and will yield you more potent mushrooms.
join the revolution! viva la :poop:

A 55 gal drum filled 5" isnt that much substrate, mabey 5 gal, so you only need 4-5 qts. It would be just like doing a rubbermaid tub but much, much taller. This height will cause problems when it comes to harvest, inspecting and just general axcess to the casing.

no the drum is for the pasturizeing of the straw the 55gal tub is what he is useing and 6" in that should be fine
