well with no agar then cloning is going to be next to impossible. it is very unlikely that you will be able to get a sterile chunk of mycelium off that bad boy. Best bet is to put it in the fridge and get some agar.

Is there a specific part, cap vs stem, of the morel that would work better to try to clone to agar?

Liquid culture. 1 tablespoon of karo syrup, 110mL boiling water in a clean half pint jar. Put a slice of the inside of the stem in it, let it grow out. good luck, enjoy that tasty mother!

id break open the stem and extract tissue using a flamed scalpell. then, dunk tissue in 0.3% peroxide.
make some karo or honeywater, both = 1 tablespoon per 100ml water and pc 20 mins, NOT LONGER.
then throw tissue piece inside and screw shut, use some air filter.
additionally you can inject a bit of h2o2 into the liquid media. peace ohm

>Liquid culture.
Terrible idea with morels.
It is notoriously difficult to get a clean piece from the inside of the mushroom tissue, since the mushroom has a cavity and the walls of the mushrooms are so thin.
Try to place as many pieces from the inside of the walls as possible on many petri dishes and hope you get a clean uncontaminated growth on some of them.
In my experience morel is not particularly fond of peroxide in agar, at least not in higher concentrations which P. cubensis still handles without problems.
Good luck!

anno, he has no agar as indicated in opening post, so making petris COULD be a bit difficult
MAYBE though, the 'strainsaver' tek could work. you should try to find it but here is it in short:
simmer woodchips, sterilize wouldchips in filterdisk jar, (peroxide them i'd suggest) and throw in a piece of your morel tissue (also previously peroxide'd). the chips should get colonised --> spawn --> do whatever you want with it.
btw i just come to think of it, why not simply throw the extracted tissue (even though it may be so damn hard was anno says) direcly into sterilized (aaaaaaaaand peroxide'd) grain jars? i had some success with cubensis "cloning" this way.
@ haz right on baby heh peace ohm
*Edit* btw what isit with psychoslut and anno, both experimenters with the same avatars?

Hey, Just send it to me... I'll isolate it for you. You can try to get spore, but that will just hold a little better while you go get some agar.
Nice pic, by the way

use the cardboard tek or the brown rice flower tek in the cultivation section. Right now i have 4 different edible cultures preparing for long term storage on BRF.

if he hasnt done it by now, i bet the morel mycelium would have already turned into a state where its really not preferrable to use it for cloning anymore ... peace ohm

The toughest thing about cloning morels is the contamination. The past couple of years I've succeeded, but only with very fresh specimens, a very nice set of 'watchmaker' forceps, and a brief peroxide dip. Tissue taken from the thickest part of a cross section. Even then, some molds can be a problem. If you want to get a pure culture for trade or storage [though they don't store well] it takes some work and materials. Most likely agar would be necessary to ensure it was pure. To just expand it out could be as simple as soaking the fruit(s) in some water, and using that water to inoculate an area outside. DH has great success doing this, though I imagine he's using the wash from lot more than one! I remember one guy a long time ago who saw fruits a year after pouring out a single 'blended morel'. It's always a gamble, but why not try?
