The Army

I got a call from a recruiter today. They have been hounding me for a while now because they know I am unemployed and I applied for more information online one day.
They are getting so desperate they now are offering me a $20,000.00 sign on bonus if I join up with the team. hah.
Anybody know if I was to join up do I get this sign on bonus check in my hand as soon as I sign the papers or is there some kind of wait period? I have no idea how it works but I could use $20,000. Would make for a good investment that's for sure.
Don't really want to get into the army or any government related B.S. but it is pretty enticing. More than likely Id get a gun slapped in my hand and sent straight to Iraq though... fuck that.

Yeah I would appreciate that man.
I was thinking of that myself but I have no idea what to sign up for that wouldnt entail going to the middle east.
Any suggestions and comments whether positive or negative are welcome.

Heh. You dont get to pick what you do in the army, or MOS. (Military Occupational Specialty) Your recruiter will TELL you that you can pick, hell, he may even give you a sheet and tell you to write down your three top choices. they are under no obligation to give you any of these, no matter what they say.
trust me, i went through all that bullshit, and I wouldnt do it again if they doubled my enlistment bonus. Which, might I add, they took away from me when I got the fuck out.

If I ever was to go in Id make sure that they gave me EVERYTHING signed in writing so I could sue if they did not come through with what they gave me.
It's not letting the government buy me out fractal. It's getting that $20,000 and putting it into investments for profit. I will basically be playing the government the way I'm looking at it.
I would also meet many new people and associates.

nah. You dont get your enlistment bonus until you finish basic. They break it up into three three-week phases (red, white, and blue) I was like, one phase short of finishing and had no desire to do that shit anymore. I had an out, because I was only 17 and had lied about a bunch of medical problems to get in. (pretty fucked up time in my life)
So they got my real medical records from my doctor back home and set me loose from S. Carolina w/ a plane ticket home and the money I came in with. Which was like, 5$, since my recruiter said I wouldnt need any money.
I went in as an administration specialty. Fuck if I can remember the MOS designation. This was 4+ years ago.

Well bro if you end up enlisting much luck and good vibes to you man.
Iv got a lot of debating to do. I'd rather join the Navy if any branch but they have not offered me any type of sign on bonus. I wonder if I went and told them what The Army is offering me theyd do me a better deal?

If you're intelligent they'll save you from the war, and give you a cushy job... You also have a choice as to what you want to do. I'm enlisted in the NAVY but from what I gather the work is going to be cake, and I'm in a non-combat zone.

Yeah see that's what I am looking for. Somthing in a non-combat zone.
My uncle was in the NAVY for many years. Worked on an aircraft carrier and got to go all over the world. I guess in a time of war the aircraft carrier is one of the safest places to be.
I would love to be able to travel all over the place like that and get paid for it. However my main concern is a damn sign on bonus... heh.

The navy isn't really much of a combat source, especially in Iraq. So more then likely whatever job you pick, you'll be in the clear. You can also specify what exactly it is that you want, they're a little more ameniable to requests then most would think.
Although, I didn't specify non-combat, I just noticed it on my paperwork.
They'll pay for your education up to a Masters degree, and sometimes higher in certain situations. That and them acting like parents and housing and feeding me, seemed fairly good... their are some negative sides though. (zero-tolerance).

I've yet to recieve it, since I'm not going till at least August, and as late as Dec. 6th (due to my particular field being a rarer one, they want basic to coincide with their formal training).

It's a SCAM BRO. I've SEEN IT. Yes you get $20,000 right away. You blow the money quickly, like all money, like we all do. Then they ENSLAVE you for 4+ years.
DO NOT DO IT.
My 2 friends who went to the army for 4 years both got $20,000. They came back all wierd, act funny, bully like, like they came out of prisons.
Very wierd man.

Total of 6k for sign on bonuses. AECF program, could've done the nuclear program but didn't want to take some tests to get their (nuke is the most rigorous program, but also has a shorter life expectancy due to exposure of radiation, and has less real life application then AECF as it isn't as common of a technology). Would be more, but I don't have a highschool diploma, or an associates degree (my college credits and grades made up for having no diploma). Starting as an E-3 advanced to E-4 shortly after, and the rest of the advancements will be dependant on my work ethic and all that.
Going to be some 32 weeks of training, if not more as I believe their is additional specialization available.

I'm really torn about the military.
Reasons I want to join or would be inclined to join:
1. My fellow countrymen are getting shot and blown up. I want to help. I feel guilty that I am sitting here all comfortable and they are getting killed.
2. The thought of combat does not scare me at all. I wouldn't look forward to it, but it doesn't frighten me.
Reasons I don't want to join:
1. I have a problem with authority.
2. I like my personal freedom.
3. I am afraid I would be shuffled into a position or a deployment that I would hate. I don't want to wash humvees and clean bathrooms on some base in South Korea or Germany. If I were to join, I would want to be given a gun and I would want to go to Iraq.
4. I don't know if I would fit in. I am a mature 25 year old male. I don't know if I could stand being around a bunch of 17-19 year old immature goof-offs.
5. I have always been kind of a loner. I don't know how well I would do in an environment where teamwork and cramped living is necessary.
6. I am not enthusiastic about the U.S. being in Iraq. I would not be joining for my country or the current administration. I would be joining to help and stand with my fellow citizens who are there.

Make sure you also get a decent paygrade for that sign on bonus as well.... or else it isn't worth it (If you do decide to go in the army).

I fully agree with you 1-6.
1) I figure though, that I'll play around with the rules, and I'll use the rules to my benefit. I can be very cunning with rules, and pretty much if I don't like it, I'll raise some hell, tell em to eat me and get away with it by using rules. I don't think I'll have to do that though.
2) So do I... I've since given up any prior "illegal activities" it's worth it to me for a free ride (education wise).
3) Talk to a recruiter, just because you're in the army doesn't mean your cannon fodder, your job determines a lot about your deployment, that + your intelligence. Your AQFT (might be a different acronym) score from the Asvab determines your eligibility, the higher the score, the more jobs available to you. For instance I can pretty much decide what port I want to go to provided my grades in the program are at the top of the class.... I can already gurantee they will be so... not an issue.
4) I'm 20 years old and get along better with 40 year olds then 20 year olds. Immaturity... their is no escaping that. (Granted we're all immature at times, just don't take shit)
5) Same, I ain't going to blend for shit beyond what I have to.
6) I hate this war... I'm very against it, not as to the nature of it, like the killing and all that shit, although that's bad, but it is life... but the bunk bullshit premise of it. I figure it'd be better to have those that have common sense doing shit, rather then the shitheads that are always fucking up and abusing people...

It's the only reason why I'm going, and because I don't want to hold down a bullshit service job while going to school.
Customer-Service/Hospitality is the dominant type of work over here... both of which I can do fine, but I detest kissing peoples ass and stringing them along for a sale.
Killing two birds with one stone. Getting real world training, + taking care of my education.

a recruter just got busted here in CO. he helped a HS student get a forged diploma and how to beat a drug test. the student taped it all. the media here had a field day and then later some retard did a midnight driveby and took pot shots at the local recruitment center. i laughed my ass off! especially at the guy's S.O. getting all pissed off and denying the fact that the army does what ever it can to get another meat puppet.
ALL RECRUITERS LIE!!! DO NOT LISTEN!!

As long as you see through the lies.... that's the importance. I have had 2 recruiters so far, I pretty much told them they don't need to string me along and feed me bullshit. It's working out fine.
Blunt Honesty is k3y for both parties. Make your stance clear, and they'll make theirs clear... if not learn about body language and physiological responses... its easy to discern a lie from a truth .

I was in the the army for three years. There were fun times and not so fun time. Now that I did it I wouldn't change the experiences for anything. Right now this is my second semester of school. I haven't had to work since I was in the military. They give me enough money for college and living. I get to do this for three more years.
You can choose your job. The better you score on the asvab, the more opportunities you get. Just remember that some jobs aren't exactly what the sound like. I was a Combat Engineer which I thought was engineering. What this job is, set up obstacles for the enemy including minefields, and breaching enemy obstacles. What I did in Iraq was mostly destroying Iraqi ammunition or moving it to a guarded place. So just because you have a certain job doesn't mean you won't do other stuff. During my military time I did the work of janitors, police, infantry, mechanic, grounds keeper, cook's assistance, medic, and other things I can't think of right now
About the 20,000 dollar bonus, ask for what job and for how long. There are some jobs that have lots of people in it so they won't offer a bonus. That kind of bonus sounds like its for a job they need people in and for at least 5 years. After basic you must turn in a bunch of paper work to apply for your bonus. It will be taxed at around 35% maybe more. This may have changed but if I remember correctly, if its over 5,000 dollars, you'll get half of it after your paper work for your bonus goes through (it will take a while) and the rest will be given to you over time. If you receive a dishonorable discharge, you will have to pay your bonus back if I not mistaking.
If you want to go in as a higher rank, there are some physical training requirements that you can meet to be given a a rank of e-2 (more money). If you get a couple of people to sign-up, you can even be given the rank of e-3 before even stepping into boot camp.
As for becoming a different person, that difficult to say. I do believe I became more emotionally detached. The military can change some people into uncaring rude egotistical people. The military is people giving other people orders. Yelling and demeaning others is sometimes very common. Some people take this to heart I feel. They let this become part of their ego. I had the greatest appreciation of life after coming home from Iraq and finally when leaving the military. It really put things into perspective. You will in a sense prostitute yourself for the army. I looked at it a give and receive situation and to me it was very well worth it.
While in the military you will get tons of benefits that you should take advantage of like free dentistry, free schooling, workforce programs, and on-post facilities. Also all pay grades receive a raise every January to combat inflation. I think it around 4% but I not sure.
I hope my post was informative. Good luck in any decision you make and feel free to pm me if want to know anything specific.

Listen to Randall. You're in for a huge wakeup call. You don't realize the lies you've already bought.
You will be government PROPERTY. You can go out in San Diego or wherever, get a severe sunburn that prevents you from duty, and get an article 13 for destruction of government property.
This comes from one who has been there.
Enjoy....

Huh? I haven't bought any lies. I explicitly said that I like my freedom (and that is one big reason why I don't think I could hack it in the military). I know recruiters will cajole and lie to get you to sign up. I know that you will quite probably have to deal with asshole superiors.
I know all of this stuff.
