Can I cool jars?
    #4125446 - 05/02/05 11:23 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Hey is there any way I can speed up the cooling time on jars after PC'ing?

after you've waited for the pressure to stabalize inside the pc you could put your jars in the fridge for a couple hours.

i just leave them sitting overnight...if you don't already know, this is a hobby that requires much patience. good luck.

uh, they are pretty much cooled down in 8 hours after opening the cooker and taking them out in my experience, i doubt the drafty window or dark closet, or even the fan would do anything.

i think the fridge will be fine, i've never tried it but i would go ahead and fridge them before i'd freezer them...so that's why i suggested it.

Let them cool naturally or you risk cracking the jars. Patience.

The fan and the drafty window will increase the rate of cooling.

I think a closet would slow cooling if any effect at all.

the jars are made from soda-lime glass, they cant take thermal shock very well,
letting them cool naturaly is the best way

well personally i have done it in the fridge probably about 4 seperate times not one broke and once outside well below freezing. But when i was trying to make a print container I put some empty jars in the oven for 45mins just to cook the shit out of everything at 275 degrees. I didn't wait for them to cool I had 6 jars poured water in 5 of them all were ok last one broke. room temp water

Cooling them in the fridge is ok, if you are using proper canning jars.

Cooling them in the fridge also hinders the ability of thermophilic bacteria to flourish during the cool down phase, perhaps increasing the viability of the substrate.
