im boilin 2 jars now im gonna put um in my rubbermaid and im gonna buy some perlite in a hour or so can i put the pewrlite in after and can i start moire jars in a few days?
oh and is verm or brown rice harmful to inhale?

I've read that inhaling vermiculite isn't too good...somewhere in this forum, I think. If you're just now boiling your jars, you won't need a terrarium (much less perlite) for a couple of weeks. Try to get your terrarium set up and your humidity up above 90% a few days before your birth your cakes. I could have saved myself a lot of stress and aggravation if I had listened to that invaluable piece of advice.
I've noticed that many newbies (myself included) have trouble attaining the necessary humidity upon birth.

wouldn't have thought verm would be bad to breath, in as there is nothign to breath in.

It is pealite which is harmful, as it is the same as inhaling glass dust, which i guess you can work out is bad for you.

I hear the rice is deadly if you breath it in, one sniff and your dead! :)


My advise really, is to get all the ingrediants first, and then start doing the cakes. I know its exciting, but once you have everything - you can do it properly.

oops, I'm an idiot. you're probably right that perlite is the bad one. I know SOMETHING I'm breathing is killing off my brain cells (at an alarming rate).

Yes perlite is very bad to breathe in, but verm was once bad to breathe in as well ( im not sure if it still is) due to the fact one of the 'vermiculite mines' had asbestos in it and some would end up in the final product , essentially making the vermiculite a carcinogen. Im not sure if it is a carcinogen by itself and I would assume it would have a warning on the bag if it was. I always make it a habit to wear a dust mask or wrap a wet towel around my mouth/nose when pouring perlite though.

I wouldn't worry TOO much though, as I've worked with asbestos without protection before (although you could say I was extremely lucky not to have any repercussions).

I've read that perlite dust is similar to glass dust, and that alone is enough to get me wearing a mask when working with a fresh bag.  Also, I flood the bag in my bath first.

I'm sure it's normal to have noshed your own muck at least once.
