Are old cakes bad cakes??
    #4123697 - 05/02/05 04:25 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have about 30 1/2 pint jars that have been done colonising for over three months now.  I've had some hectic happenings lately and haven't had enough time to actually make casings from all my jars.

I opened up my TIT (which I unplugged 10 weeks ago to halt any growth)the other day and inspected all the jars.  A few cakes had dried out and shrank, but most of them still look healthy with no signs of mold or contams, just some mycelial waste here and there.

All I want to know is if it will be okay to use these cakes even thought they've been sitting for so long?  I guess it wouldn't hurt, I just don't want to end up having a grow tub full of mold in the end.

Thanks  :sun:

Is there any sign of contam? I'd dunk them ASAP if there alright, I'd dunk them for about 16-24 hours to fully rehydrate them. And see if anything happens. Cuz 30 mason jars are a lot.. Don't waste it

Thanks, Cray. I always dunk before casing anyway, but it may be wise to keep them under a bit longer. Yeah, 30 cakes is definitely a lot to lose, especially since they're going to be cased!!
