Shpongle
    #4123411 - 05/02/05 03:03 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I have heard a lot of talk on this board about the band, "Shpongle". I decided to go to the Shpongle website and check them out. I have pretty much fallen in love with this band and I'm going to purchase a Shpongle CD soon. I was wondering if any fans could tell me which CD is the best to buy first. Thanks.

Get Tales of the Inexpressible first, if you must buy only one.

But there is really no excuse to not get all of the stuff shpongle releases.

I realize this isn't answering your question, but...

Personally, I've found Shpongle to be a little too... I don't know... superficial is the only word I can come up with. It seems like a lot of their music is designed just to "sound neat" as opposed to inspiring emotional reaction, which is what I look for in music.

It's very much like the difference between tripping out on visuals, ("Woooah, look at the colors") and actually delving into yourself and getting something constructive and beneficial out of the trip.

I realize almost everyone here probably LOOOOVES Shpongle... I'm not trying to offend anyone. You're all welcome to your opinion.

However... I have found Mogwai and Boards of Canada both more appealing than Shpongle.

To me, the most important thing about psychedelics isn't the visuals but the chance to look past them. So, I sort of agree with Jacques to a point.

But, I don't think Jacques has a valid criticism of shpongle. You are criticizing them for failing to achieve something they didn't set out to do. They set out to recreate DMT imagery, not enlightenment. The next album is called "nothing lasts". This relates to buddhist concepts, the grasping of which requires looking beyond the imagery. So, I'm sure it will be great. Maybe, Shpongle is enlightened. Being enlightened, shpongle would know that the purpose is the journey, and not the place at the end of it. So, they focus on the imagery, not because they can't look beyond it, but because they have looked so far beyond it that they know searching is futile. Having given up (i.e. become enlightened), they figure why not focus on some cool imagery. I dunno. I'm talking out my ass.

May 22nd. It will be available sooner through www.twisted.co.uk

And yes, get both shpongle albums. I happen to prefer Are You Shpongled, because its more alien in nature and is simply outrageous while tripping.

Cheers.

The Psychedelic Circus, dig? A hi-tech audial roller coaster. Nothing more, nothing less

I prefer Are You Shpongled? as well. But lets see what Nothing Lasts will have to offer.

Yeah, I hear you... I wasn't criticizing, that wasn't the point... I was just expressing why I don't find them to be the end all be all of psychedelic music. It's just my personal tastes and what I look for in music.

i prefer "are you shpongled" album also though both are fine.

and to jacques: i know what you mean but i must disagree a bit cause when i get deep into shpongle sound it does manage to deliver profound emotional response like the build up and flute in "behind closed eyelids", however the effect is lessened cause ive heard the albums so much since they came out but i still like to chillvout to some of their tracks.. guess its about personal preference cause i find boards of canada rather boring

Thank god, I thought I was the only person on shroomery who wasn't floored with BoC's music.

Definitely not alone McKennaDMT, I thought it was really boring too. It might be good when you're tripping (I haven't tried) but Shpongle is music I can trip out to when I'm not tripping, and makes me dance around like a deranged shaman when I am tripping. It's not for delving into yourself, it's for fun, maybe Boards of Canada makes some good music for ambience while you're tripping but most of the time it just scares me. If you want to delve into your mind turn off the music, turn off the lights, and lay in the dark silence thinking.

I prefer Are You Shpongled due to its otherworldly feel and completely unique sound. Tales is stupendous in its own right of course, but it reminds me of Mr. B's spanish class at points. I love em both. I'm intruiged to hear the new album, they really changed their sound each album so far and I look forward to feeling the next incarnation.

I'm always looking for new trip music...I've never heard those two groups. Can you say what you like about them? What is their sound like?

never heard of BOC huh?

Get "music has the right to children" right friggen' now!

Mogwai's alright, but BOC is a totally unique trip. No one else does electronic music quite like BOC. Love it or hate it ( I love 'em ) they are doing thier own thing. I've found them to be repetitive sober, too dark and slow for E or shrooms, but when I take E with mush nothing is better than BOC. I listen to them stoned alot as well. Good stuff.

And the new shpongle is great! I'm gonna hook up on an eigth of cubes tomorow and trip out to it. Can't wait.

Levitation Nation drives me nuts with bliss!

I can only imagine how it's gonna be on a fine dose.

new shpongle is totally sweet but i do have some criticism
i liked how on many shpongle tracks they would just chill with whatever they were doing and go slow and trip out
i find on the new cd that the greater number of short tracks take away from the whole thing. if you need something from the old shit to try and relate to thing or dorset perception. not in terms of the actual flavor of the track but just the movement of it. i mean not a single track is over 5 minutes on here! what happened to and the day turned to night!? though, they do flow the tracks quite nicely from one to another

but whatever, there are most definately some awesome tracks on here and i am actually only starting the cd up right now for the 2nd listen so don't listen to me
i do not think it is a bad album at all, the whole time i listened to it i was rockin out and raving of its sweetness, but i am not sure if it is my new fave shpongle or what (yet)
definately very strong on the eastern themes for alot of the album
