sawdust spawn viability?
    #4122544 - 05/02/05 09:03 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I ordered 5 lbs of shiitake sawdust spawn and received it about 2 weeks ago. I intend to inoculate logs and some bags. FP said it would be okay to store it this long if kept cool and low light. I am just ready to use it but noticed that a couple of the popcorn primordia areas have started to fruit inside the bag. I read elsewhere that spawn should be very white. This seems to be slightly beyond that stage - with white streaks and patches throughout but mostly an orange/brown color. I have started to break it up and it's kinda a spongey texture. Anyhow, my basic question is how viable is this?
Excuse my ignorance as this is my first time!

Thanks--

Thanks for your help! Another reason I asked is because I read an older post where someone indicated that once fruiting begins, the spawn is not viable. I was a little confused by that.

i'd take this as an indicator of a particularly vivacious strain.

all my spawn often has primordia forming on it. Cant inoculat fast enough i suppose. Lions man gets this afro of primordia and it grows reaaly well when spawned.
