Bleach or Peroxide?
    #4123081 - 05/02/05 01:34 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

What do you guys like to use for general casing misting or other things like that? I would go with concentrated bleach hands down for sterilizing work area but i am hesitant to start misting with it. I was reading hippie's bleach tek though and it sounds good. Also, What %'s do you guys use for h202 and bleach?

I have used h2o2 mixed with bottled water...in the past.
and got great results.

now I just use purified water that comes in a gallon container from the grocery store.
mainly because my city tap water quality is so bad!~
and have been getting great results too.

I have never tried using a bleach mix.

I spray with tapwater!
It is clean water, its better then the water from bottles. Amsterdam has almost the best water in teh Netherlands actually, the water is filtered in the dunes...

Sometimes I boil it on forehand, and sometimes I add a little H2O2.

Dont add bleach, imho. Preboiled tapwater with a little h2o2 must be more then enough to spray a healthy casing.

Wish I lived in the Netherlands! I've seen some beautiful pictures of the countryside.

actuall RK i've visited cedar river watershed (the watersource for seattle) and our water is untreated. it's sterilized, but doesn't classify as treated water. during one stage they UV blast it to kill germs. there aren't many watersources like it in this country, apparently.

according to their numbers it's some of the healthiest drinking water in the US, and we're far below the national requirement for drinking water.

but i still have a brita

You guys have never heard of using bleach for dunking/casing purposes? If I remember correctly Hippie3 over at mycotopia.net has a Tek about using it for dunking contaminated cakes as well as for casing spray. He recomends a max of 1:200 Bleach:Water ratio, but you can use less. I don't have the link but just search for hippie's bleach tek if your interested. There were some really intense results posted over there of cakes coming back from Trich infections.

Roadkill: I wish I was a master mycologist such as yourself and could just use spring/tap water without worrying about it, but unfortunately I always loose casings to contams of various sorts (usually that damn cobweb mold). I'm Working on it , its a process =).

LOl yes I am actually, some people give their babies water from bottles cause they think it is better. The dune or, where I live, forest filterd water and then filtered/cleaned by the watercompany seems to be better.

So our daughter gets the same water as me mushies.. ;P

Rotterdams tapwater isnt so good, but still good, but it is rather "hard".

Our countryside can be lovely, but more and more is consumend by expanding cities and highways.

Actually Holland is the densed populated country in the world, after Bangladesh and Hong Kong or something.

Anyway, it is quite liberal, and thats cool!

I have heard of using bleach. But I dont support that stuff. I rather use H2O2, if anything.

Besides contams dont really strike here.

Colonised cakes have never contammed here. Also contam ON the casing layer I never had that.
It is more likely to develop IN teh straw, where the nutes are...
Im lying my first ghetto shitty corncasing contammed with cobweb. And had greenmold in the cornsub.

Cobweb, too wet and too low air exchange!

MF

PS: Trich is the only contam striking here, knock knock on wood...

Actually there is flouride and other chemicals added to our water source here in the Seattle area.

I used to do tropical fish for many years(24)...and had several water tests done on the water quality.

I'll stick to the purified water...you can have the tap water.

Anyone from here that knows me will know what's getting ready to come out of my mouth. Bleach! I've been using it for years in dunks and misting with nice results. The key is not to use to high of a ratio. 1:200 or even 1:100 works like a charm. I keep a mist bottle with a 1:100 ratio for misting my casings in between flushes. I clean the casings up real good and give them a rinse then a bleach mist all over the casing to get the bacteria and unwanted spores. I can get several flushes out of a straw casing with this method.
