Mixing strains?
    #4123025 - 05/02/05 11:17 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

A bit of an accident was had were about 20 jars of WGBR were mixed up in the incubator. Most can be identified by amount of growth or lack thereof. Is it okay if the 2 strains (ksss and PESA) get mixed?

Yes, one of two things will happen, either one strain will over power the other strain and you will get either KSSSS or PESA, or the two strains will both fruit and you will have both PESA and KSSS. :smile:bluhoney

No its probably not ok. The way mycologists test to see if two mushroom strains are the same or different (excluding spore printing or genetic techniques) is to grow two different mushrooms on a plate of agar. When they meet in the middle if they are different strains they try to kill one another or at least don't grow together. So at best, they won't grow together and will fruit separately if you use them for cakes or something, at worst they will attempt to kill each other and possibly succeed in a casing setting. Might be interesting to try though with a few jars...

Just do single jar casings...you could also to 2 jar casings...and keep one jar to one side and one to the other. They'll meet in the middle and you'll get one side with one strain and one on the other. Id just do each jar in a seperate one though.

hopefully you have learned from your mistake. i like to identify my jars with coloured rubber bands. Tape with a label o it works equally well.

use masking tape on your jars...label what strain is in each jar...in the future.

if you make spore prints...don't trade them...unless you have them marked as unidentified.
