Good casing advice for proper moisture content
    #4119602 - 05/01/05 04:57 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I was reading through The Mushroom Cultivator by Paul Staments and I came across something that ya'll might like to hear:

It's important to have a casing layer that's at 90% water content.  An easy meathod for preperation of such a mix is:

Measure out your casing's mixture and exclude 10%, keeping it on the side.  Fully hydrate your other 90% of the dry mix.  After hydration, add back in that 10% and you've got your 90% moisture content!  Then it's ready to sterilize via. microwave or PC.. whatever you do.

What great advice!

Also a good spawn formula reccomended by Paul:

Per 1 QT jar:
1 cup rye grain
2/3-3/4 cup water
(water depends on how much your grain absorbs, so experiment a bit)

This recipe should produce 48-52% H2o capacity.

Does it ever end?? Everyone should get this book!

Absolutely. I've checked the copy in the local library out many times and it's an invaluable resource.

Does anyone else use this meathod for hydration??

I've never worked with coir before... could I hold some dry as explained above and add it later after the hydrated coir was drained?? I don't think that'd work.

Yeah, I dunno about coco coir. It seems like the dried portion wouldn't expand all the way. It could be worth a shot, though.

Well, I am doing the 60/40 tek. I suppose I could hold about 8% vermiculite or so of the total amount. That might do the trick. It'd keep it around 90%.

I saw in your grow log you picked up some crushed oyster shells. Where'd you get those at? Thanks!
