Mushroom I.D. (Georgia)
    #4120642 - 05/01/05 07:55 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

We found three different types of mushrooms today on a trip into a cow pasture in central Georgia. All three grew in the same field, directly on cow manure. Any help on ID-ing would be appreciated

Mushroom #1:

-Gills are dark, blackish

-Spores are dark, black or brown

-Very thin stalk, about 4-5 cm

-We were unable to get a good spore print

-No noticable bruising

-No noticeable smell

-Our guess: copes?

Mushroom #2:

-Spores dark, black or brown

-Gills are brownish

-Stalks are narrow, white, appear to be hollow

-No noticable bruising

-Smells identical to previous cubes I have eaten

-our guess: cubes

Mushroom #3:

-Very thick stalks; about 5-6 cm long and 4-5 mm thick

-Gold colored cap, appears to be uniform

yeah, sorry about the size, was an accident. We only guessed that one of them was a cube; and like I said, it was a guess. I was more looking for help from people who _are_ good at IDing them, with what they actually are.

Nothing active there. Give it a few weeks... Never hurts to get some practice though :mushroom2:

I agree, none of those are active.

When hunting cow dung mushrooms, always check for a blue bruising reaction. If it does not bruise blue, then it is not a Cube or a Cope.

I guess pan subs are a possibility on cow dung, but I may be wrong.( it might be only horses)
Otherwise of course no blue= nothing active.
For anyone out there, the bluing reaction is quick and very noticeable.

Keep us updated on the field man! Any mushrooms at all is a good sign, and in a month I bet there will be cubes!

yeah.. the reason we were unsure about these was that they didnt seem to bruise blue; though the one in the middle of the first picture looked identical to most pictures of copes i found (I have yet to find any real copes), and the second looked similar to some cubes, but again lacked any bruising. The third I was totally unsure of, kind of just curious what it is. I was actually beginning to think that maybe the blue bruising wasn't always so noticeable in some cubes or copes, but we set them aside to be sure. Thanks for the info so far about that =)

as for the fields, we have had great luck this year with cubes ! all around central georgia and even further north.

The second pic with the goldish cap looks like Panaeolus cyanescens
Exactly what part of Georgia are you in? Ive only heard of Pan cyans growing in south (mostly deep south) Georgia. Metro Atl and up is too far north (atleast i havnt heard any reports from that range). The ones with the thick stems are curious. those were growing on manure?  They look like something i have found recently in interface ecosystems (between cow pastures and forests) at the field i go to.
The ones with smokey silverish grey caps and petit stems are common early spring panaeoli (inactive).
