Spore printing The weakest link.
    #4122178 - 05/02/05 06:03 AM (12 years, 24 days ago)

I have one question that I haven't find an answer from old posts, teks or FAQs.

How is that possible to come out with a clean spore print when fruiting condition are not sterile? Fruiting chamber is vented on a daily basis, spreading airborne contams, and casings are misted with an unsterile water.

it may be because the airborne contams cannot get a foot hold and therefore do cause any problems. (Guess).

Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride... And we... kill those people.

well i bet the veil protects the gills for the most part until the last minute making it close to impossible for contams to land there. also the gills are on the underside of the cap and its not like something will settle out of the air and land on the underside of the cap.

good point and also how sterile do you have to be when having a look at or fanning your cakes.do you need to spray everywhere with disinfectant or will it be alright.

You choose a mature cap just before/as the veil begins to break.
(intact veil protects gills & spores from contamination)

Then - in aseptic conditions - remove the veil, seconds before you lay it on the printing material, then cover it with a sanitized glass jar, or plastic cup.

If you are anal about it, do a small invitro grow in the bottom of a wide mouth gallon jar, with a filtered lid.

Extra heavy duty thick wax paper and/or butcher shop paper.
You can alc or lysol swab one, allow it to evap, then lay print.

Doubled one blank on top a print, you can seal with an impulse sealer (as above), food saver sealer, or even a clothes iron.

won't the lysol residue kill your spores?

That is why you let it evaporate before putting the cap down.

You can also use foil instead of wax paper, folding it over and folding edges to keep everything out.
