First hunt, few finds, help me identify :-D
    #4122085 - 05/02/05 04:33 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I went on my first hunt tonight! YAY! I'm no to all this stuff so forgive me. I live in northwest Florida and was hunting in a cow pasture. This is what I found during the hour and a half that I was out there.

I was upset that the moon wasn't out. Just pitch blackness and stars.

I found each specimen on top of or around the edges of cow manure.

Numbers 1 & 2 I assume are P. cubensis. They bruise blue and the gills are very dark purple, pretty much black.

Number 3, I'm really not sure. I can't seem to get this sucker to bruise. Its surface is very smooth and shiney. It's sking is hard almost like plastic. I could use a little help on this one.

Number 4, not too sure what they are. They're very dark colored and I'm assuming they're poisonous.

Number 5, I only managed to get the cap of this one. It's very elastic. No clue what it is but it's bruising blue.

Number 6, It's kinda damaged, but I assume it's a P. cubensis.

If you need more info or more pics to help identify, lemme know.

"Assuming" is what sends people to emergency rooms, make sure you take sporeprints and toss any that you can't positively identify.

cubes, copes, and coprinus but make sure the copes are brusing or they are not active and coprinus is deffinetely not active but i would just stick with those cubes if its your first time and dont know how to properly identify cause inactive copes taste like ass and u deffenetely donte want to consume alcahol with the coprinus.

#'s 1, 2 & 6 Look to be P. cubensis, check for bluing, they will blue if they are.
The two pics of #3 look to be different mushrooms, the bottom looks like Pan. antillerum.
#4 It could be the pictures but they look like old, rotting Cope cyans to me. They will also have an obvious bluing reaction if they are.
#5 Does not blue, as is stated, it is a Coprinus species, as others said.

How sure are you, GreatOne? Are the Copelandias safe to eat? They're too dark brown and too small to tell if they bruise or not.

How can I make sure that the number 4's aren't the deadly Conocybe coprophila? Do they even grow in Florida?

im relatively certain those are Copelandia.

even in the photos they look like they're bluing.

the ones in your picture are all mooshy and black tho
not fresh enough to eat
old specimens
so that makes for a tough-call especially with bad photos

maybe next time you pick in the field
youll have better luck with the copelandia's
but until then i would suggest not
experimenting with eating them yet.

not until you yourself can positively identify them

remember to always positively ID all the mushrooms
you plan on consuming and never eat anything un-ID'd

in florida, this can usually be done by just observing
the bluing reaction, on each and every mushroom.

no dont eat them...

i am surprised that you didnt notice any bluing on the #4's
you might need to look a little closer

but at any rate, you still dont want to eat them
because you-yourself havent positively identified them yet.

im just looking at your pictures from a computer
you're the one with the mushrooms in your hands.

you did however identify the Psilocybe cubensis correctly.
so just stick to eating the cubes until you can positively identify the copelandia.

Perhaps the copelandias turned completely blue when I picked them and that is why they are so dark? These specimens were intact and solid when collected so it's hard for me to believe that they are 'old specimens'.

We had heavy rain here for a good 7 hours on Saturday which ended at around 6pm. I went hunting from 11:45pm til 1:00am on Sunday which means there was about 30 hours after the last rainfall. So surely they couldn't be old, could they? And even if they are, could it hurt me to consume them?

1, 2: Psilocybe cubensis
3, 4: Panaeolus spp. (4 is definently inactive, 3 probably is too)
5: Coprinus ochraceolanatus (hard to tell with just the cap though)
6: No idea. Possibly a cube cap from the thick looking flesh...

Are you sure about #4?
Ill take a closer look i guess...
They were all probably waterlogged from the rain, which leaves them very open to bacterial infection. Any of the ones that smell strongly like yeast &/or fish, DO NOT EAT. Many bacterial infections have a green appearance, as if the shroom had stained blue. Be careful. Also, the cubes obviously got enough sun to get bleached. Interesting...

The number 4's do not smell at all. I'm in the process of collecting spore prints from them if they're still capable. What should I look for in the print?

Black.
Its pretty obvious that they will produce such a black print so the only reason to take one now is for cultivation purposes.

:-( I really want to eat the number 4's since I did not gather many active specimens on this hunt. Are there any observations at all I can make to classify these 100% as Copelandias and not Conocybe coprophila? And how can I tell if they really are 'old specimens' or not? What are the risks if an old specimen is consumed?

uncle luke, again, don't eat those.

what happens with Copelandia mushrooms is called "deliquescing"
the mushrooms begin to autodigest themselves
and in the process they turn black.

again, do not eat them
BEcaauuuse..they are not identified

never eat a unidentified mushroom.
