What's next for this newby?
    #4120886 - 05/01/05 08:43 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I'm on my first casing now using BRF cakes, just started it a few days ago and it's still colonizing.  I'm always looking to the horizon to prepare for my next venture though.  Once I've gotten BRF casings down, what would y'all suggest I do to increase my yeilds?  I was thinking of maybe trying whole grains next.  Casing rye or popcorn in larger jars...  it will give me more subtrate to work with... but are those any different than BRF as far as yield?

BTW, I'm almost done with my first regular cakes (dunk & rolled)...  I'll weigh in probably next week and we'll see how I did.  Thanks for all the help and putting up with some of my stupid questions (like the poop in a jar one, heh  )

Can someone provide a link that explains the difference between bulk (like h.poo) and BRF cakes/casings? I've been trying to understand this but I haven't been able to find anything.

Awesome, thanks! Horse poo with straw or without? Or will it make any bit of difference?

I've read that, but do you fruit from the poo?  So I can take my BRF cakes and use them as a spawn with the poo and then fruit from the poo?  These are the blanks I haven't been able to fill in yet...

I think you can use BRF cakes as spawn. I don't see why not. You'd probably want to crumble them tho. From what I've been gathering, you spawn to the poo, then let it colonize like with jars (maybe inside a big bag or something?) and then case it.

That's what I thought too but I was told by one person that you couldn't do that...  I was gonna go get horse poo and spawn it with my BRF cakes then case but someone on here said that was nonsense...

Hmrph...  Did they say why it wouldn't work?  I think we need some more input from the experts.  Do you have a link to that thread by chance?

Colonized BRF cakes will work just fine. Chop them up in a food processor or grate with a cheese grater. Use the large holes. This will create many more innoculating points to colonize your bulk substrate. Any colonized substrate will work as spawn. Lots of peeps use WBS as it colonizes fast and is cheap.
Good Luck.

I really don't see why it wouldn't work. Spawn is spawn. You just need some myc in the poo to start the colinization. If it's from BRF cakes or rye or a syringe, it's still myc.

I don't believe anything from a syringe would work. Pretty sure spores wouldn't germinate and grow in time to fend off contams. By the time you used enough LC, I believe all that extra liquid would be a breeding ground for contams.

I was thinking more along the lines of a myc syringe.

Also, can you get pre-mixed horse-poo/straw at a nursery or something? Isn't that all compost is?
