Dolomite lime
    #4120445 - 05/01/05 09:17 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

For a while I couldn't find any Coco Coir...well today I found it.
When my PF-Jars are done, I'm gonna spawn them with some TennStud and use Roadkills 60/40 tek. Now the problem is the lime, the only lime I can find around here is the dolomite kind. Will I be able to get away with using it in much smaller portions? Or should I stop wasting my time and order it online?

I don't believe so. Check into using crushed oyster shell instead.

absolutly donnot use the dolomite kind. The kind you need will consist of mainly calcium. Dolomite contains extremely high magnesium content which prevents mushroom growth. Look for "aglime". This is  agricultural lime and is made up of 95+ % calcium. Some states its tough to find aglime. If you cannot find it, look for chicken or horse calcium supplements, or use hydrolized lime, hoever at a much, much smaller amount. :smile:bluhoney

or if u dont have access to crushed oyster shells, calcium carbonate hemrit crab sand, or anything like ti, by 2 dozen or 3 dozen eggs, crack em all throw out the eggs, save the shells, wash em reeeeeeallly good then crush em up to a finer constancy or for best results use a coffe grinder

Yea...I was gonna use egg shells, but I'm just too damn lazy to wash em out and stuff. Think I'm just gonna order some lime from myco supply.

Thanks for the input guys!

Plutonium, yes, it could be bad not to use lime.

Heres why,
Lime is used to lower the acidic qualities of your casing layer. See, germs love acidic enviroments. Mushrooms love
alkaline enviroments.

Get a ph test kit from your pool store. Check your casing mixture. If it is between 6.5 and 8 your alright, 7.5 works very well. If its acidic, you will need to add lime. If not your casings will more than likely get contaminated.

One other point about acidic levels, as your flushes come through, your casing will get much more acidic, a natural by product from the mushrooms using the casing. This is one of the reasons why some mycologists remove the casing layer after the 1st or 2nd flush and replace it with a fresh one. Thats why regular mushroom compost from the farm stores isnt right for mushroom growing any longer. It has already had mushrooms grow in it, thus making it acidic. Thats just what regular plants love, but not mushrooms.

Of course you can always buy a bag of that compost, add in more carbs( molasses works great, so does wheat straw "tea", and nitrogen (manure, horse, chicken), and lime to buffer, and wala, nice "reconditioned" compost for your growing enjoyment;)bluhoney

Define "nice" pinset.

Non storebought manure:
