Casing Newby with pinning question...

Incubating my first casing now.
1/2" Verm 2" Multi-Spore Colonized BRF Substrate 1/2" 50/50 mix
Myc is starting to pop up in about 8 different places. Is this sufficient? There were 4 spots yesterday that I covered, and these 8 spots today I just barely covered. They are not super aggresive myc, just little whisps of it that are starting to show. Should I initiate? I'm on the 3rd day since I cased.

He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Lightly patch those spots. i mean lightly. if you are using coarse verm sift it a little to get some of the finer particles. lightly sprinkle it on the spots, just a little now. then mist a little, just enough to moisten those spots. let it continue to work til you get a little more even amount of growth.

what made you decide to do that versus using perlite or expanded clay or whatever?

i think he is talking about the layers in the casing container. you wouldn't use any of the materials you listed as a bottom layer in a casing.

ok, mental note, but could you enlighten me as to why not? i've got casings done that way now that--other than the crappy pinset from my supplying fruiting conditions too soon--seem to be doing just fine?

I'm new at casing, but from what I've researched you can just put the subtrate in and then case, or you can put a layer of moist verm on the bottom to give a little extra water to the casing. So I opted for the latter.

i think its cuz perlite and hydroton dont do as good for moisture content as vermiculite....i suppose it could be used but verm is better IMHO

perlite/hydroton is better for humidification not moisture retention

Some peeps put a little bit of wet verm. on the bottom to aid the casings w/ more water. IOf you're using pf cakes as sub., then you probably won't need it...Grains on the other hand, i'd do w/e I could to help give it just a bit more water...
Verm. is ok as a casing layer...But 1.)By itself, it's hard to tell if it's saturated...or to over-saturated until it's to late... 2.)Not well with aeration...
There's more but i'm kinda lazy ...I usually just use coir and verm., only b/c i don't bother (lazy) with testing ph (peat moss)...

correct. i have never found a substitue for verm in pf jars. i have read som instances of using peat, but i never tried it. the peat info was after i grew, but i haven't seen widespread use of it.
