afoaf is doing a coco coir casing and was wondering how deep of a casing layer to add to the substrate?

3/4" to 1" thick. Depending on how thick your substrate is.

Yup, 25% of your substrate, up to a point. Don't know if you need more than an inch. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. HC

So you would put an inch casing layer on top of an inch of substrate? You said at least an inch any other time. Goes against everything I've read and been told. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. HC

depends on how thick your substrate is.
how deep is it?

i often go against what most say, its my nature. and yes i would go to about an inch even with the inch casing. Think about it like this. That inch of substrate is the vital life of the mushrooms. Do you want it to dry out fast, I dont even think and inch of substrate is enough for sutable flushes. It will fruite and fruit well dont get me wrong. But yes i would go with an inch of caseing on an inch of substrate just to give it that extra umph

The correct depth to apply the casing layer is directly related to the depth of the substrate. Greater amounts of substrate increase yield potential which in turn puts more stress on the casing layer. Prolific first and second fruitings can remove a thin casing or damage it's surface structure, thereby limiting future mushroom production. A thin casing layer also lacks the body and moisture holding capacity to support large flushes. To grain the full benefits of a casing layer on bulk substrates is 1 inch. For fruiting on sterilized grain, the casing need not be as deep as for fruitings on bulk substrates. Shallow layers of grain are commonly cased 3/4 to 1 in deep.

Where did this 25% of substrate depth come from then? Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. HC

i dont wanna be persistent, but just do what feels right, there is no real science to it, just cover the substrate with as much as you have imo the more the merrier, i feel simplicity is far better then getting messed up with ratios n what not.

if its only 2in deep, i'd go w/ like a 1/2 in casing layer... my first bulk tubs that started fruiting yest. were about 4 or 5 in deep w/ only a 3/4" casing layer, maybe 1"

I've never heard 1/4 of the substrate depth...always 1/3.
Either way...my substrate depths are always 3/4 of an inch on a 1-2 inch casing. Thinner substrate dpeths, shouldnt be made...thicker substrate gets an inch....thats as high as I go though.

I use 4" to 6" of substrate on my bulk grows.
I use a 1" to 1 1/4" casing layer on these.
---
less than 4" of substrate...I'd use a 1/2" to 3/4" casing layer depending on how much substrate is used.
