case run day 20 - still no mushrooms?
    #4117915 - 05/01/05 09:00 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I have two big casings with b+. substrate is popcorn and casing material is coir/verm. the casings have a bottom layer of moist vermiculite thats 1 cm deep. then a substrate layer 8 cm deep with a casing layer thats 5 cm deep. I had the casing in incubator until it showed mycelium growth in the small valleys (just as described in the mushroom cultivator) than I put it to fruiting. The humidity and air exchange is according to growth parameters in the mushroom cultivator.

The mycelium grows trough the casing layer to what seems to be what is described as overlay. I keep patching this with moist casing material, ive done this 3 times. the overlay (if this is overlay) covered around 2/3 of the casings but the overlay just comes back over the patched area after a day., The casing seems moist and fine to me but there is no mushroom buttons appearing.

Am I beeing to hasty or is 20 days not enough., i see TMC says 10-16 days. This is also the first time I make casing this big

Any other ideas\tips\suggestions what could be the reasons for this?

Substrate level is not deep enough for starters. In my casing experiments, the thinner the substrate level, the longer it takes to fruit.

Second, cold shock that bitch. Play in the fridge for 24 hours with foil covering it. That should help. Drop your humidity down and do a good light cycle.

Um and stop patching, its wasting the energy of your casing. Do you have a way to show us pics? That could help us also.

Pretty much to thin of substrate like said. You need at least 1-1.5 inches...2 would be better. Underlying contams could factor. I think its more likly the conditions your giving with the substrate depth though. And I've had thinner substrate depths fruit before...not with a casing layer on though (just little bits left in a jar).

A picture and detailed description of your setup (air exchange, light, humidity, ect, PMP, martha, ect) would be needed to help you much further then "You messed something up, go read alot more and figure out all the things you did wrong, and dont do them again.."...but I can say that until we get more info

"life is like a drop of rain getting closer and closer to falling into a lake, and then when you hit the lake there is no more rain drop, only the lake."

His subst. layer is 8 cm deep, more then 3 inches that is. Enough.
I think casing layer is to deep, being 2 inches.

But like scatman says, give more info.

i don't work in metric but i can tell you casing layer is too thick. i would have gone with 1cm at most. see when the casing layer is too thick it wastes the mycelium energy on no nutrients. since you are using coir it is like you added another substrate layer on top of your already colonized casing.

personally i would have removed half of your casing layer due to wasted energy and do a 10 degree farenheit drop. mist the casing layer before you innitate pinning.

to prevent overlay in the future colonize the entire casing and then add a very thin casing layer to retain extra moisture to provide a micro climate for the mushies to grow in. sounds like your heart was in the right place but you a little guidence.
