i know they need to be pced, but it seems like people like wbs more so than the pf cakes. Is this true, or is it just me? Also, what substrate do you like?

PF cakes are used mostly by people new to growing because of ease. Whereas WBS etc are used by slightly more experienced growers. Some experienced growers swear by PF cakes, and some n00bs grow just fine on WBS. Think about what you can handle and what you are going for, and decide.

If you have a PC, quart canning jars, lids & tyvek WBS spawn is toilet flush simple (after you learn how). WBS is prefered because it is fairly forgiving, CHEAP & available about everywhere.

WBS is not a prefered as a substrate. The best bulk substrate for the buck is weathered horse manure (if you can find a local free source).

do you think that someone who hasn't done wbs before would be able to have success the first time, or is it something you need to learn how to do over time...

If you follow the TEK's, you should be fine. Water content is what you need to be careful with. Make sure you drain well. Good Luck.

stevenkoozer, if you can follow directions properly, you can do wbs. Its not like these teks require skills possessed by few, it just takes some practice to learn what works best for you. Just don't shortchange anything, and don't deviate from the directions the first time and i predict success.
