what to do after casing flushes?
    #4116689 - 04/30/05 11:52 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Between casing flushes, should I pick the mature looking mushrooms and then put it back into the terrarium? Are the little ones going to mature and form the second flush? Or are all the little mushrooms going to abort after I pick, and new pins are going to form? I was going to patch, mist, reincubate and then rebirth.. but I read that all the pins are formed at once..... argh..

Im really confused about this. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a lot of success deep scratching and recasing the top and sides (the casing shrinks away from the sides of the container) of the casing.

After each scratch, i incubate a bit and then pop into the f. chamber. I believe this adds some time between flushes, but the 3rd flushes are just as strong as the first, if not stonger (pinset wise, not potency).

Yes, you can pick the big ones and leave the less mature ones longer.

By scraping do you mean removing the old casing layer? or just scraping the surface to tear the top myc up? Wouldn't it be better to remove the whole casing layer and re-apply a fresh one? That way you don't end up with an exsessivly thick casing layer on your latter flushes. ?

You don't want to remove your entire casing layer as it should be colonized by the mycelium almost to the surface of the casing.  Removing the casing layer and applying another one will force the mycelium to re-colonize it and will slow your next flush, as well as increase the possibilities of contams depending on what you're casing with.  If you're going to dunk your casing, clean it of aborts, dunk it, then patch up the places where the casing floated away... These pics are from second flush. Believe me, the method i use works very well!

I scrape only the top few mm of the casing off. When you sprinkle the casing back on, you don't need to put much back on, just to cover the surface again.

Make sure you sprinkle and leave it very open and porus, this helps promote hyphal knots.
