Why is it called "the sun"? Why not just a star? We don't have such names for billions of other stars in the universe, some even far far bigger than ours.
Why is it called "the moon"? We don't have special names for billions of other chunks of lifeless rock stuck in the gravity of planets, so why this one?
The answer is that we name what is pertinent to our subjective experience. On a grand scale, you can apply your logic to anything to point out how it is not unique, but something commonplace in the universe can be declared unique because we as a species perceive it to be.

. I think they do name the other stars/suns, unless they just name the solar systems....(?) I suppose you could just call The , "The Star", or just, "The "....(?) It is the one that means most to us here on this planet (that I "know" of).... . They do call them Moons for the other planets.... The interesting thing is that all of the other moons of other planets have their own names.... . Our's is just called, "MOON"....

We've also named other shadows, such as the lunar eclipse, the solar eclipse, the umbra, the penumbra, etc. Night really isn't any more of a special name than umbra to me, as it's not like it's named after mythology or such, it's rather just an identification of that time of darkness.
We have named some relevent stars, just like we've named some relevant shadows, but to my knowledge most stars, solar systems, planets, and, when we discover them, extrasolar moons only have identification names, which is mainly just letters and numbers describing when they were discovered and such.
I know that when I'm talking about Jupiter, I always confuse S/2003 J 10 and S/2003 J 17.

. I actually didn't know that we named the different shadows of the moon all like that....!? But "our" moon is still called, "The MOON.... So, we name all of the shadows of the moon, and we name "Night" as our most "relevent" shadow here on Earth.... Do we name any other shadows....? . . As for Jupiter and it's moons, they are....: (Closest orbit to outer orbit....) Metis Adrastea Amalthea Thebe Io Europa Ganymede Callisto Leda Himalia Lysithea Elara Ananke Carme Pasiphae Sinope . Where on Earth does "S/2003 J 10 and S/2003 J 17" come from....?

I know Jupiter's major moons, but I said that chances are any extrasolar moons we find will be given names like we've given the majority of Jupiter's moons. Jupiter has 60 moons; in order, they are: Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, Thebe, Themisto, S/2003 J6, S/2003 J1, Leda, Himalia, Lysithea, Elara, S/2000 J11, S/2003 J20, S/2003 J3, S/2003 J12, S/2001 J10, S/2003 J18, S/2003 J16, S/2001 J7, Harpalyke, Praxidike, S/2001 J9, Ananke, S/2001 J3, Iocaste, S/2001 J2, S/2003 J15, S/2003 J17, S/2003 J11, S/2003 J9, Carme, S/2003 J19, S/2001 J6, S/2002 J1, S/2001 J8, Chaldene, Isonone, S/2001 J4, S/2003 J4, Erinome, Taygete, Pasiphae, S/2001 J11, Kalyke, Sinope, Magaclite, S/2003 J7, S/2001 J5, S/2003 J13, S/2003 J5, S/2001 J1, Callirrhoe, S/2003 J10, S/2003 J8, S/2003 J14, and S/2003 J2.
Whoops, I found all the minor ones and forget the major ones, Europa, Callisto, Io and Ganymede.
As you can see, we only give special names to things pertinent to our subjective experience. We name the largest moons of Jupiter, notably those that are most interesting to us subjectively in terms of their potential for life, their composition, etc., and then the small recently discovered moons we just give shitty names like 2/2001 J1. And these are things, in terms of the universe, within an atom or two walking distance for us. We give names to those things relevant to us, like we named the Sun, the Moon, the night, but if we find something that's only there for the sake of knowledge, like a mediocre boring star only visible by telescope, we give it some abbreviation and forget about it.
Night is like the Sun to us. We experience it fully, we see it without any doubts, and it is a part of life. That is why this large shadow has a universal name, while the shadow of a nebula, if it even has a name, wouldn't be known to anyone except the most astute cosmologist.

Damn, I didn't know that about all those moons....!? The book I got today must be a basic one.... It is nice and has really cool pictures of different "events" in the universe.... <<<AHEM>>> Thanx~ for taking the time to write all of that out.... . Perhaps the code name moons of Jupiter were not known of back in mythical days, and/or maybe it has to do with who found them all, or maybe they are under a certain size/mass, or sumthin....?
OK, now all of those shadow patterns/eclipses that you named for the moon, those are all names describing what we can see.... We call the "night" side of the moon, "The Dark Side of the Moon".... So it is not a "Shadow", nor a "Night".... Interesting.... So, would it be alright to call "night" here on earth, "The Dark Side of the Earth"....?

yea!! The stupidity of people, calling anything with any name. I'm glad I'm one of the smart ones who don't use names. It is the hard way, specially when you are shoping on-line, but it is the way of the spirit.

I think we should go the other route and give every point of existance a special, unique name. You know like that atom over there is Mellow, this piece of pollen is Ronaldo, while that one over there is Donaldo...
That mass of chimpanzee feces that was just hurled over that bush is referred to as George W. Bush....
Peace.

The people that called it "night" had to name it something. They aldo didnt realise that the earth was round, or that the "night" was just the earths shadow.
What would you have us call it?

We would have Day, and Shayday (like Shade-Day)....
But, I don't wanna~ screw up all of the songs, like Avril Lavigne's song that I quoted in my last post.... Night is kind of a "universal" term(or axiom), I just wondered why....
