teh fall of saigon
    #4114356 - 04/30/05 01:04 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

5 years ago I started going to vietnamese PHO restaurants. Awesome food. The first time I went to a PHO restaurant it was closed.

There was a sign saying they were closed to rememeber the fall of saigon.

Now I thought vietnamese were enraged by this and that the fall of saigon was a MUORNING.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/04/30/vietnam.anniversary/

The vietnamese in vietnam are celebrating, actually. Is it really that divided? Is there still a strong dissident, anti communist party in vietnam, or are they repressed? I was under the impression that south vietnamese still hated the north.

Is it that the american vietnamese hate the comunist vietnamese then? I used to live near Westminister, California which had one of the largest (if not the largest) vietnamese population in america. There was a large part of town that was called "Little Saigon" which looked very asian in its architecture. I remember reading in the papers that the head of the communist party in Vietnamese was originally scheduled to come and speak there, but then had to cancel because the police force in westminister said they couldn't GARUNTEE his safety.

Is there a lot of resentment amongst the american vietnamese against the motherland?

My impression was that many of the South Vietnamese were actually pro-Vietcong, and that our war had nothing to do with protecting the South Vietnamese, and everything to do with stopping the spread of communism.

I wonder how many just wanted all the fighting to stop. That area had been the focus of conflicts since the French colonised it...

Well, that's exactly why so many supported the Vietcong. They saw the US as just another imperialist power taking over after the French.

Yes, I'm sure that was a factor. And I'm sure there were some who really didn't care who was in power, as long as the bombs and bullets stopped.....

Say what you will... there were plenty of south vietnamese that hates the commuist north. And the north's version of 'unifying' the country involved slaughtered the southern vietnamese that didn't want to get sucked into communism

It was a simila situation as what happened in north korea. We talk shit about our involvement in vietnam, but for some reason everyone thinks that the korean war was noble.

Of the Vietnamese in this country most if not all had relatives who were left behind and slaughtered by the Communists. They're here because they were the few lucky ones who got out.

That's what happens most of the time with people who collaborate with occupying powers. In Europe, after WWII, the collaborators who didn't get slaughtered on the spot got tried and sometimes executed. Not trying to condone it, but what do you expect?
