Is it worthwhile for me to have a larger substrate layer?

What would be the difference if any between casings that are both 1ft by 1ft with two quarts of substrate vs three quarts of substrate? Would the extra quart per 1ftx1ft casing be benefitial or is it better off making nine 2q casings vs six 3q casings? Taking in to account a bottom and top layer of 50/50+

id go with the 3 quarts ud get bigger fruits and i think faster pinning

The benefit you get is mainly quicker colonizing time. This gives mycelia a better chance of getting a stronger foot hold against contaminants quicker. With less substrate , you have a longer colonizing time, and more of a chance of a germ taking over. Its really a personal preference. My friends opinion, 2 quarts have been shown to be a plenty. Just make sure the pH is right on with the use of your 50/50. Peat is a wonderful tried and true casing additive, but the wrong pH, and it can contaminate quick. :smile:

Thanks. I'm going to make six 3q casings tonight once I sterilize my 50/50+. I throw in a handfull of oyster shell ag lime to help balance the pH =]
