culture glove box

though it may be too late for this, I remember back a few years ago with that anthrax scare, I saw a lot of places selling those sealed glove boxes so you can open up mail and not worry about dangerous contents inside.
I was thinking that box would be perfect for culturing and isolating mycelium. I think I also remember they were dirt cheap because no one was buying them. Is there another substitute for something like that?

A regular homemade glove box would be a cheaper alternative to those. Cool idea though, I love the isolation box designs.

For kicks, I sent an email to them inquiring what they charge for the 2ft box. It's been a couple days and I haven't seen an answer though.

They never got back to me.
I'm gonna send another email; and in a moment I'll go ahead and just try calling them.
Standby...

That's capitalism at it's finest, working the American crowds in a panic from the anthrax scare. Damn sheep, I bet they only sold 5 boxes. That's a fine box on the other hand, look at the sweet plastic machining. Thanks Valis.

Yeah man - and that diaphram is a pretty killer idea too.
It's a damned shame that there is apparently _zero_ realistically affordable and functional/suitable glove boxes available for the home/hobbyist and amateur cultivators - even though they couldn't possibly be _that_ difficult and expensive to manufacture.
$100 - $200 would seem like a fair price for those who didn't want to make their own, unless there's just something I'm missing that actualy makes those things so expensive to manufacture.

There's always the possibility of finding a fairly cheap sand blast cabinet in decent condition.
For someone who was really serious about forking out some cash for having a "suitable quality" _real_ glovebox Banthrax seems to have some cool stuff much cheaper than what you'd get from anywhere else - checkout the Safe-T-Dome Barebones kit - seem's better quality than mycotopia's "portable glovebox", but still priced about the same.
Here's a pretty decent set of instructions for making your own. If you wanted to go super freaking hardcore - check out Part 2 of this pdf ... of course, the camera, monitor, intercom and adjustable lights may not be strictly necessary... <grin>
Hell if I had the dough ( and ahelluva lot more experience in the hobby ) - I think I'd go for that SafeTDome barbones kit - looks perfect.
Beers!

Yeah, but didnt you notice...that 2 cu ft model can be shipped USPS saving you 100-300 bucks in shipping (compared to all their other glove boxes which are bigger)
I picked up a box at walmart...the lid is in two peices and stays attached and swings open in the middle (and closes together there too). Just lay it on its side and open one of the flaps (on the bottom) and you got a nice little glove box for 6.50. Not the best, still need a clean room but hell you could cut two holes in the side for free too...

Thats similar to mine.
Mines just a 55qt sterlite container with silicone around the lid rim with two holes cut for hands. Turn it upside down and the silicone seals it fairly well to the work table like a gasket.

nope i even think you are overestimating. i have a friend who works with many different types of plastic (like the polymer used for that).
rawmaterials (polymer sheets, fittings, gloves, screws etc), maximum 30-35 $, assembly in 15 minutes by "skilled" workman, 4-5 $ maximum. usage of machinery for heating/bending the polymer (4 minutes) 3-8$.
so 1600... thats a bit fresh. then again, remember those 2k-bug "experts" and "consultants".... seems the fair price is always what you can make people pay.
