More casing weirdness...
    #4111947 - 04/29/05 06:37 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So, I've finally got my casing fruiting nicely. But there's something strange about it -- the shrooms look nice and healthy, but they are still small (about 1.5 -2" tall) -- however, some of the veils are already starting to break (!) -- and I don't understand why, because they're still so small. Does that mean they're done growing? Also, could this be a sign of hidden contams? (the casing took FOREVER to fruit, like, 20 days). Opinions, please...

Hey what's up. What are your fruiting conditions? Temp., humidity and such. Whats your substrate. Don't think its as much a hidden contam as much as your conditions. Good Luck.

Well, my conditions are... not so great *lol* I'm humidifying with perlite only and my temp is about 75. I'm just hand fanning maybe five times a day and misting once a day or so. Basically, it's not an optimal set-up. Do you think that since the veils are breaking then they are definitely done growing?

No, they will keep growing for a little more. Most people like to harvest when the veil breaks to help keep down on having spores everywhere. Your set up doesn't sound too bad. Temp. is right. Fanning sounds OK. Perlite for humidity for casings sould be plenty. Casings don't require as much humidity as cakes. What was your substrate? What is the strain. Good Luck.

The substrate is just plain vermiculite (again, could be better, but it's all I had) -- and the strain is Golden Teacher.  Thanks for the input, Hippiechick -- I appreciate it!  There aren't that many of us girls here, are there?

Not near enough. When you say your substrate is just plain vermiculite, do you mean your casing layer. Mushrooms won't grow in just plain vermiculite. No nutrients.

Oh, yeah, sorry -- I did mean the casing layer is plain vermiculite (such a noob, I am) -- the SUBSTRATE is vermiculite/brown rice flour.  Also, I forgot to mention this before -- some of the guys here mentioned that my casing layer/crumbled cake was very thin (it's only about 1 1/1 - 2" deep.  I think that could be causing problems too.  So, yeah, they're small -- but at least there's a lot of them!

Hey. 2" of BRF in a casing should do well. What strain are they? I had some EQ's that produced quite well, but they to were small. Just a lot of them. Good Luck.

Cinnamon-

the problem is the substrate depth.
by this i don't necessarily reccomend that you take 24 brown rice flour cakes and crumble them in a rubbermaid tub. of course this is not practical.
what is commonplace is to take this colonized substrate and use it to spawn a larger amount of pasteurized substrate. the best, in my oppinion, is horse poo.

if you're picking it out of the field it needs to be weathered (should be able to see fibers"

if you value convenience, then it is my reccomendation to try tennessee stud .
his customer service is as good as his product, (his shit smells like roses).

you may pasteurize it in the following manner: click

and the ultimate level of convenience is pre-pasteurized substrate; no mess or hassle at all. perfect moisture content-
just dump it, then your crushed cakes, and mix... you let it colonize, then case with the same 1/4 ratio of casing to sub. depth.

good luck
