Ha. I got gentoo going on my first try, but then I realized it was Linux and I had no use for it whatsoever. And it promptly fell into neglect.

it is so much more convenient to start with binaries (up and running in under 2 hours) and then rebuild whatever you want while you have a working system.

trust me. you really won't learn any more by doing a stage 1 than you will by reading the walkthrough. i getcha tho. i used to feel somewhat like the sage martyr or some shit everytime i brought a machine up via stage 1. it's a real masochistic show on a P90 with 40MB RAM (even using distCC).

your going to have to learn to edit all the .conf files and crap regardless of what stage you jump from.

linux can suck my balls!!! [Re: debianlinux]
    #4113547 - 04/30/05 03:10 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

linux can suck my balls. i mean...i dont even know why i am trying to install it. sure, i can compile shit to make it boot and run programs .075 seconds faster... but to do this, you have to run a os that wont support many major programs unless you spend another 8 hours setting it up. and why do i want to learn linux? because people say its cool and you can do more shit. well, the fact is for every 'cool' thing you can do, there are 5 things you cant run. ok, i can use wine to "try" to get a wndows program to run correctly, but to do so i have to spend 3 hours configuring it to work right and even then, it is probably unstable.

AND on the security issue... i run adaware and AVG antivirus and havent got either in close to a year. so.... why am i going through the effort. i spent 9 hours last night and i wouldnt boot. i have gotten 5 hours into configuring and instaling gentoo again tonight and something happens mid install and my computer freezes (granted, i think that was my fault trying to read what kind of video card i have) so..

.i finally get back to where  am and i decide to look at fstab. now i dont think its right for some reason. it says /boot is /dev/BOOT, / is /dev/ROOT, and swap is /dev/SWAP.... i think it should read /boot is /dev/hda1, swap is /dev/hda2, and root is /dev/hda3, but i am terrified that if i change them, everything will be fucked up again and ALL I WANT TO DO IS SEE WHAT A DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT LOOKS LIKE IN THIS DAMNED THING!!!!!

so, like i said, linux can suck my balls. i hope it burns in hell.
now... i need to go back to installing it :smirk:

I believe that in the manual (if not the fstab file itself), it says that the fstab that the live-cd provides you will absolutely not work for when you want to boot your machine up. (for obvious reasons). So you've got to write it yourself.

If you need to use Windows programs so much, maybe Linux isn't really for you. I use linux because Windows programs frustrate the hell out of me. You have to agree to stupid EULAs, tell them not to install spyware, and they pollute your menus and system tray. The best part about installing Linux is you get to kiss those pieces of shit goodbye.

Situations like yours are why I don't recommend gentoo to newbs even though I use it myself. Use Ubuntu or something to get your first taste of linux, and you'd be using the OS in a few minutes wouldn't get frustrated and end up saying things like "linux can suck my balls." You're putting yourself through this punishment, it isn't the OS's fault.

And yes, you should change /dev/BOOT to /dev/hda1 etc.

You could also try a more n00b friendly distro.
