Did the mycelium stop growing?
    #4110328 - 04/29/05 09:22 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I have a few jars that are just about fully colinized, just the bottoms of the jars need to be colinized, but it's seems like the mycelium has stopped growing, either that or I cant tell. How long does it take for the mycelium to cover the bottom of the jar.
Temps are 82-84 degrees, and humidity is good, I have flipped them. I am growing majorly impatient, it's been 24 days.

do you have your inoculation holes taped?

do you have alum foil covering your lid?

if you do take it off.

Its pretty common for the growth to really slow down towards the final stages of colonisation of BRF jars. You've taken the right step of flipping the jar, just be patient. My first jars were pretty uneven the longest jar taking over a month. Only other sugestion is make sure you've taken off the tape from the inoculation holes - although chances are you allready have. Good luck.

if its not the reasons stated above.

it could be that you packed your substrate too tightly in the jars.

flip the jar and hit it with your hand...loosening the cake...so that the cake is no longer connected to the bottom of the jar.

keep the jar upside down (lid side down)...and it probably will finish colonizing.

No I didnt pack the sub down, so that can't be it, I think that it is just moving very slow. I could case it, but I want to grow right from the cake. Thanks every one. And about smelling a contam, my jars have a slight funky odor kind of like funky feet, is that natural? it's not a really strong odor, but I hope it's not a contam, if it is that would mean all my jars all contaminated.

I might cauterize the uncolinized parts, and just dunk and roll it, would that be ok?
