question about bulk colonization...
    #4109558 - 04/29/05 03:23 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Relatively new to bulk techniques.... So, I've got two bulk projects going on: grains spawned to horse manure and another to compost. the compost has been colonizing for two weeks and the HM has been going for 8 days. there is almost complete colonization in both, but there are just a few spots, less than quarter sized, which have not quite filled in. the compost seems to have slowed considerably and to be taking a long time. the HM has been much quicker.

my question is: is it best to wait until everything is completely white to case?? or is it usual to have a couple patches here and there that aren't quite fully white when casing bulk?

thank you for your advice!!

Wait until full colonization is achieved before casing.

is it abnormal for the compost to be taking so long to colonize?

It depends on the size of the substrate, but two weeks is not unreasonable. There are many factors that can vary the colonization time, including moisture content and how tightly the substrate was packed down.

What are they in?(the sub. colonizing) Jars...Bags..?

-Gnostic

If Jars and if you're using tyvek, flip them upside down, it'll help release co2 and give more o2, helping the process along...extened period of time allow for high co2 build-ups, which can slow colonization...

Gl man, bulk is so awesome

they are in plastic tubs (around 7X14)--your basic rubbermaid deals... covered in two layers of foil--one with holes, one without. then housed in a larger plastic container.

And how does it smell?...

Greenie Meanie looks white before it turns green...:(

But i doubt you've got a contam on your hands, i'm sure it just needs 2 days roughly, after that, i'd probably worry, but jus a little :smirk:

yes, have spawned, indeed. :-)

temps are mid to upper 70s, taking into account internal temperature increases...

smells lovely so far...

My guess is time. I'd wait about 2-8 days...If they are quarter sized uncolonized spots everywhere....then 8 at the most...if only a couple, then about 2-4 days...

Just patience(sp?) is needed IMO..:smrik:
