Firs time using rye - does this look right?
    #4108657 - 04/28/05 08:28 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I'm a bit worried about these two jars. The rye was prepared by soaking for 24hours then simmering for 45 mins. Left to drain in the sink for 15 mins. Put into the jars and P/C'ed for 45mins.

This is what they look like ~7 days after inoculation.

I think in parts they look too wet and in others too dry. I thought that simmering was supposed to achieve perfect water content? Perhaps I should start over and leave to drain for longer? Any thoughts? Maybe I should go back to millet :/

They look a bit wet. When they appear that wet out of the PC, shake the hell out of them and distribute the moisture among the grains as much as possible. Then do it again, and again. You can really improve things doing this. Also, what are you using for a filter top? Your jars will pull through if you have a good filter lid that's providing decent evaporation. My 1/4" hole lids sometimes autocorrect this problem through evaporation.

Recondite: Well, what you can't see clearly in the pics is that they look a bit slimey against the glass. Also, the myc in the second jar isn't growing very well. It looks little it's in many little 'bits'.

Diver: Okay, i'll shake them up again. I'm using polyfill lids, so I'm guessing they'd provide decent evaporation. One thing that worries me is that I can smell something a bit sweet when I put my nose right to the polyfill, I don't think rye smells like that either.. Might be a bacterial contam..

Okay I might PC for longer next time. Did shake as soon as out of PC. They were at room temp at innoc. My syringe might be to blame. Though they do look a bit too wet. Here's a pic after shaking:

I'll ditch and do these again tonight. Hope my other rye jars go okay. Used fresh spores and a much cleaner syringe technique.

_JJ_, go this route.  Seriously, once I started just loading my jars and PC'ing, I kicked myself in the ass for all the time I was wasting on soaking and simmering.  Using this method, I have never had a rye quart contam.  I PC for 75 mins, and that seems like overkill to me, but I've never actually tried anything less, could probably go 60 mins safely.  If you do a few jars with 5cc water differences, you'll never have to worry about water content issues again... GL bro :stoned:
