Warped TiT
    #4109172 - 04/29/05 12:49 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

My TiT is pushing inwards from the sides. Is it because I got the Rubbermaids instead of a harder plastic? It's sitting on four 1/2 pint jars and there are six tiewraps holding it down.

Any suggestions?

Yea, now that I took em off I think you are right. It even poked a little hole where that crease is. I was only tightening it to rid the huge gap on the sides between the two tubs. Maybe I had too much water in there.

Well I patched the hole, so I'm gonna wait until tomorrow to put it back together. Just finished PC'ing, so have to get it ready by tomorrow now.

Thanks!

Put weights in it to submerge it more, instead of tie wraps

Yea, but I think it would take quite a bit of weights. That is a lot of freakin force.

I'm just gonna have to get some that are not RUBBERMAID. The harder plasic kind.

Sounds good

I personally don't even use anything to make it submerge...

I've noticed that w/o a water pump, the water on the sides doesn't stay as warm as the water closer to the heater....so i figured i might as well not give a shit

So far it works great and i've had no probelms...

The bottom stays at 86F, the top part stays at 82F

Thanks -Gnostic.

It was a combination of the ties too tight and too much water.

I corrected these things and now it looks much better. However, there is now a very, very small hole in the bottom of the tup right where that part was bent inwards. I didn't realize this until I inoculated my jars last night. There is a very small amout of water that is leaking in. So far I have just kept a towel over it to temporarily keep the water content down until I can fix it.

Should I buy a new tub, or is there something that I can patch it up with? Like some silicone sealant or something. I know something needs to be done because the extra water in the TiT will contaminate the jars.

I'm considering buying TWO new tubs made of stronger plastic. Need about 18 gallon ones, but can't find any opaque ones that are this size that are not "rubbery" plastic.

Yap... I just use a 40 lb bag of soil on top of the second tub to keep it down. Even without a pump, the hotter water is suppose to rise and colder water sink, thereby circulating the water.... at least that's what I remember from 3rd grade science class.

Good luck.

I've actually got a pump in there, Just didn't think it would be a good idea to put anything extra in there due to contaminents. I have some of those flat cynder blocks. Guess I could put those in there. Would they be safe enough ya think? They've been sitting in the garage for a while.

I have a lid on my inner tub, so I don't think it matter what I put on top of it. I just make sure I spray some lysol before removing the weight and opening the list. So far, no problems.

Good luck.

Oh, on top. Sorry, read it wrong. I thought you said down inside the tub. So it like bounces all around everytime you open it up eh?

I'll give it a thought.

But first I'm gonna try closetgrower's idea.

Well... closetgrower gave advise about plugging up your hole in your tub.  I was talking about keeping the inner tub submerged in water.  Sorry I wasn't clear.  Anyways, if you gently lift off the weight and gently set it down, no splashing.  This should prevent your tub from looking like your picture .

Good luck, dude.

I don't use TiT. Instead, I put a jug of water in the tub with the heater inside that. It takes up some of the real-estate, but I don't have to worry about unstacking to refill with water and the associated mess:

I use 2 different size rubbermaids in my incubator setups.

they don't need any zip ties....and the water level is 6" or so...which is plenty of water to heat the incubator.

the smaller one goes inside the larger one...and the water goes in the larger one...there is a gap of about 6" or so.

they hold less jars this way...but I have many of them.
and they work great.

thanks for the ideas.

RK, do you still use the jars on the bottom tub for stability?

also, does the water come up the sides of the inner tub for heating on all sides, or does the water only cover the bottom of the tub.

there is no need for the jars in the bottom tub...since the top tub rests on an edge.
it's plenty stable.

no...the water doesn't go up the sides.

This is probably an annoying thing to say, but before you fix your TiT maybe you should re-examine whether you actually need incubation. I know there are some folks in some climates who do, but 95% of everyone I see talking about incubation is still working on some dusty old "needs more heat!" premise.
