Not the same species i think, look at the gills, the one you're grabbing has "spongeous" gills, also the clusters are growing in some dead tree i think, wich also points to not being a psilocybe and psilocybe clusters don't grow like that. Peace, MAIA

What color was the spore print? Do the mushrooms you found briuse blue? BTW MIMA... there are plenty kinds of Psilocybe mushrooms that grow directly from decaying wood, it just depends on where they were found. Peace out, Gumby

are those growing out of wood? they look kinda like laughing gyms.... regardless tho, if they stain blue and five off a purplish colored sporeprint, your probably good to go.

I edited this post, because of the fact that I believed your mushroom was Naematoloma fasciculare aka Sulfer Tuft. Well, I'm thinking about that veil as well as the size of that mushroom! I'm stumped! Yeah, everything points to Sulfer Tuft, except for that veil. I haven't known them to have veils like that, usually only an annular zone. Anyway, MAIA, what do you mean by spongy? Can't you see those gills? And, as Gumby said, many many Psilocybes grow from rotted wood. They are saprophytes and are part of the decaying processes of grass, wood, plants, etc. Stay cool!-Levi7.

Fig: Those look VERY much like Armilleria mellea or "Honey Mushroom," a white spored, veiled edible species which grows in dense clusters on dead wood but can also parasitize living trees & shrubs. The color, the shape, everything is dead on. Except I've NEVER seen even a trace of bluing on the honeys & I pick them every year when nothing better is fruiting. You real sure about that blue-green thing? Some Gymnopilus might do that, but they have orange spores.

i had thought they were sulfur tufts except for the ring and the bluing reaction, but i must go with the honey mushroom. i have collected plenty of the former but none of the latter. they don't look sufficiently like sulfur tufts and the spore-print confirms it.

Thanks for correcting me, guess i should read a bit more before replying, you guys are really into this ID stuff, you rock. BTW Levi, on the first set of pics it's hard to distinguish the gills and i responded to that post, the pic posted after i reply i can see gills with no doubt. Anyway, for what i know Psilocybes species are dunglovers and Panaeolus species are more woodlovers, that's why i said they probably weren't Psilocybes, guess i was wrong, duh! Actually, man, Panaeolii and Psilcybes are both saprophytes. Well, Panaolii generally are dung lovers, but might show up where grass, etc. are decaying, usually associates with fertilizers, though. Many Psilocybes are wood-lovers, while many are also dung-lovers. Actually, some Psilocybes may be found thriving on wood in one area and grass in another. Panaeolii are not wood-lovers, though. Generally speaking, Panaeolii are dung-lovers. I know, it's somewhat confusing, but anyway........ Hey, you're studying and that's awesome! Keep it up! Stay cool!-Levi7.

Hmmm.........I don't agree with the Honey Mushroom. Then again, I've only picked the more caramel-colored caps, with the fibers. You know what I mean? The blue-green bluing is really mind-boggling here! I don't know about that. Although, they do have the same look as the Armillaria, but the color? Dunno. The veil, though, is spitting image as well as the stem structure. I also don't agree with The Changeable Pholiota. Still, it's possible. I'm gonna combine each of your whits and go with The Changeable Armillaria. Hehe! I'm bad! Stay cool!-Levi7.

hi fig, i also found these today growing out of decaying wood. they dont bruise blue , but the bottom of stem is slightly green/blue/yellow(as you said) Changing Pholiota has cinamon brown spore print so its not that. im still looking for what it may be. Changing pholiota has "conspicuously scaly stalk" as well. these do not.

Woodsman is right on, those are honey mushrooms. The species complex is very variable and hard to pin down without lots of picking experience. The greenish tinge on the stem is normal, faint and does not increase with bruising. A very common mushroom as opposed to most Psilocybes which are rare.

Hmm...I'm not so sure about those being honey mushrooms, if they are highly variable in appearance, then I trust wood/workmans word. Here are some honey mushrooms I found in MN, they were very abundant in the woods, and none of them looked like the mushrooms pictured above.
