Reaching the End of the Timeline of the Universe
    #4108981 - 04/28/05 11:52 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

We've passed the primordial age that lasted 300,000 years into the beginning, where the four forces of the universe separated to become distinct, nuclei formed, and matter began to dominate. Then we entered the Stelliferous Age where electrons joined the nuclei, stars came to exist, our solar system came to exist and finally, we came to exist. We'll be in the Stelliferous Age until the Degenerate Age sets in and stars burn out, proton decay sets in and black holes, neutron stars, etc. became the dominant features of the universe.

It gets more interesting though. Skip ahead a few incomprehensibly long eras and now all protons have decayed, effectively leaving no matter except the matter captured in black holes. The Black Hole Age begins, and black holes have decayed, due to Hawking Radiation, by 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years after the universe initially began, give a take a few years.

Now all that is left in the universe has decayed to photons. All black holes have evaporated, all matter has decayed, and by 10^1000 years after it began, the Universe achieves a low-energy state. Due to this, localized quantum effects now become large-scale macroscopic effects, and what would happen to time and space in this case? What will happen when the universe becomes simply a low-energy void with only photons, when quantum mechanics now rule on a macroscopic scale?

It'd be an interesting thing to see. If my understanding of this is correct at all, the possibilities of what could happen in such a situation seem astounding. In the chaos of a universe where time and space lose their traditional meaning and quantum mechanics is no longer simply the interactions of atoms and subatomic particles, but on a macroscopic scale, could even a new universe be a possibility? Could the universe even enter another stage after this low-energy age, or would it achieve true heat death and exist like this for eternity?

We've passed the primordial age that lasted 300,000 years into the beginning, where the four forces of the universe separated to become distinct

This took far less time that 300 kiloyears.

From my understanding, if string theory is indeed correct, the "quantam foam", that is, all of those crazy-ass quantam fluctuations that defy our understanding, don't actually exist, but simply result from looking at quantam activity with misconceptions....

Or something.

The truth is that we simply do not understand enough about the fundamental nature of matter, energy, force, space and time to make an educated guess at how the universe will end, if so. The proton decay you sight has yet to be experimentally confirmed, despite a huge experiment designed to detect it. Once we have figured out a theory of everything can we truly predict the fate of the universe.

1 microsecond after the big bang,

Matter:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 units

Anti matter
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 units

That excess unit produced all the matter in the universe, expanding and transforming itself since then. It means, not only energy counts but mass also counts.
What will happen ? I don't know, maybe a transformation

Yes, I realize it took far less than 300,000 years, but I was talking about events that happened in that age, whether they happened in the first Planck time or hundreds of thousands of years after the universe began. All those events happened in the Primordial Age of the universe and therefore are grouped together, even if they happened long before the end of the Primordial Age.

While it is possible we will change our theory drastically as we discover more, I do more or less think the heat death of the universe theory sounds the most probable, as opposed to the "Big Crunch" or the "Big Rip" (who makes up these names? They sound like something an elementary school student would think of.)

Our observations have shown that the rate that the universe is expanding is accelerating, and it seems a bit illogical that the universe could be expanding at a faster and faster rate and then suddenly reverse it. If you then believe the observations we have made so far, it seems to me that the timeline would be correct up to the disintegration of black holes, unless we've severely fucked up in terms of explaining black holes, proton decay, star formation or other major parts. The real quandary seems to be after all black holes have disintegrated- if anything's a possibility, Nietzsche's eternal recurrance may even be right.

Some are forming as we speak, some are yet to form - yet in the blink of an eye to the sky....

Can you explain how infinity cycles? I can see how sequences in infinity repeat, but they are still in different places along the line of infinity.

I do agree though that this age is just the blink of an eye. The Stelliferous Age is only about 99,999,999,700,000 years long, compared to the approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years after it, give or take a few nanoseconds.
