confused mushies on straw

So I got some 100% colonized straw I did in a clear sterlite container. Its 100% colonized, and has been sitting in a pmp for about 8 days. Now, I decided to not case this, as I was just very curious about how it would react if I left it alone. It has been getting like 8 hours of light a day from a warm flourescent.
Anyways, the problem is this.. I am only getting pins on the sides, between the pastic - not a single one along the top. I know I fucked up by not covering the bottom in duct tape or foil, but why am I getting 0 pins on top?! Total surface area is like 14" x 8"

You're getting pins along the sides because that's where the moisture is. Straw tends to dry very easily. A casing protects the straw from drying and adds additional moisture for fruit production. Case it next time and you'll see what I mean.

because there is no casing layer there is not enough moisture on the surface which the casing would usually provide. So it is pinning the side where the moisture is more abundant.

Just passing along a quick update..
There was so much stuff growing up the sides, and nothing off the top so I decided to perform some major surgery on the thing.
I took the thing out of the sterlite container, and the bottom and sides were like unbelievably packed with pins and mushies. I took a clean knife, and sliced them all off, and did my best to get any pieces of major growth off. It took me about 45 minutes, and man was it quite an experience!
The straw/myc thing felt like one giant sponge, and it was definitely a bit dry. I have it soaking in water now, and will leave it there for the next six hours or so. I will then case it later on tonight, and hope for the best. I also am going to flip it upside down, as the bottom had more pins on it than the top, and never dried out quite as bad as the top. Hopefully it will be apt to pin a bit quicker.
Hopefully it resists any contams that might have landed on it during the surgery, and comes out ok. I already pulled a couple hundred wet grams off it thoug.. Its amazing how much more solid these guys are off of straw than they are off of BRF.. I have also never seen anything blue up as much as these - and its the same strain I've been using for a year.
