I just got back from the store, check it.
    #4108099 - 04/28/05 07:49 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, i just got back from the garden centre and the bulk store.

I bought 6.36 kg of coarse vermiculite. It cost me 22 clams.
I also bought around 10kg of finch seed. It looks like 2/3 white millet and 1/3 red. I've never had much luck with WBS, but this shit looks pretty clean and tight.

A few months ago i also bought a case of 500ml jars for the milet i was planning to obtain in the future. I usually use 1L jars.

I also got like 70L of horse shit outside waiting to be pasteurized and spawned once i get this finch seed colonized.

Like i said in an earlier thread, i got a new cool mist and just cleaned the shit out of my martha. I was getting a little blotch.

So the plan is now:

1. CAse some jars that have been colonized for weeks. Idano if they are still viable but i figure they are worth a shot.
2. Scratch and recase a tray that i let overcolonise because of my exams this month.
3. Search the site and forums for a millet tek.
4. Try a few treatments of the Finch Seed to see if i can find a suitable ratio.

Prolly more too, but i'm baked right now.

sorry, man.
soaking serves the function of germinating the spores that you are trying to kill with the pressure cooking.
i'm sure someone will chime in about how they didn't soak and had no problems,
but it's a fundemental of preparation.

i reccomend simmering it, too, because you don't have to wonder if your grain has enough moisture content.

Suntzu's tek has failed me in the past, but because i have faith in this seed, i thinkn i'll give it another shot.

You want to avoid it?? Oh come on.. it's just soaking grains in a bowl. That's not too hard. After 24 hrs.. just simmer 30 minutes and drain. You'd have to get an exact or close to exact measurement for how much water / grain you need.

Well, as it turns out those jars i had coloniezed for weeks were (not surprisingly) contammed by some bacteria. It appears the metabolic byproducts of the fungus were contaminated by bacteria when i opened the jars to pour some out about a week ago. Ketones i believe... smelled like vanilla or amaretto.

I think i may have gotten lucky with the ratios of water and finch seed. I prepped 4 500ml jars, adding 1 cup of the rinsed finch seed to each. I added 50ml, 55ml, 60ml and 65ml of tap water to each (measured using a syringe). they all seem to have worked well, but the 60 and 65 look the nicest. The grains in the 60 are a little harder than those in the 65. The 65ml grains can easily be squished between my fingers while the 60 ml need a finger nail.

There is no clumpint that i can see with the 60ml, and very little in the 65ml jar.

Also, when i rinsed this grain, there was very very little dirt and grit and whatever else... the water was very clean.

I think later on today i am going to do up 12 500ml jars using the same tek as for the 65ml jars.

I think i will have more success with this grain mix than birdseed, just becasue of the cleanliness of the grain itself.

ANd btw, about 80-90% of the grains have has their husk cracked, but there is no mush or clumping in the 65ml jar.

Here's a good tek for grains without having to soak or simmer.  Contrary to popular belief it is not required to soak and simmer your grains, as long as they're of some type of higher quality.  I believed all the junk about endospores and whatnot, but eventually tried this method with my quart jars of rye and have never looked back.

Guess you were right about one thing, as I did chime in.  However it is not a requirement, only a practice that's been offered as a requirement because of the overstressed notion of contams.  IMO people really go overboard sometimes when it comes to contam problems.  I don't have a flowhood or a glovebox, and I don't work in the cleanliest of environments when I work.  However, I have never had a single jar contaminate... ever...

Generally, soaking is not necessary if you pc the batch for the proper amount of time. 121C for an hour and a half is pretty much enough to kill anything. OF course this depends on the food menstruum. But 1.5 hr at 121C is the accepted time and temp where there should be a huge decimal reduction in viable endospores. WHatever is left depends on how many there were to begin with, and should not make any difference if the jars are knocked up soon after.

Shit, i should do some serial dilution on this grain and plate it using PCA, OYEA, etc.

See what kind of D values the microbes in this jar have.

HEHE, nerd talk.

Edit: I will take a picure of my giant bag of verm later. It is fucking huge. Prolly like 4.5ft x 1ft x 1ft.
