Microsoft Excel help
    #4107573 - 04/28/05 03:36 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hi I'm doing a project for a class.
We're doing GDP forcasting.

I have to use all these formulas. I can choose two variables which affect the outcome. I have to find the values of these two variables which produce the smallest error.

Q-How do you set/store a variable in excel? (Like if I want to say X=3 and anywhere I have X in a formula it puts in 3. So I don't have to go through each formula and change every X until I get the answer)

Thanks

put one set of values into individual cells in one column

put another set of values into individual cells in another column

create your formula using the first two cells in each of
these columns (solution in a third column)

then just copy that solution cell into each of the new solution
cells for all the other value pairs.

YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO MODIFIY THE FORMULA FOR EACH CELL!

excel is smart enough to replicate the formula using the
corresponding cells for this new solution cell based on
the pattern used in the original

for example:

Column A, rows 1-3

1
2
3

Column B, rows 1-3

4
5
6

Column C, row 1 = fx(A1+B1)

Value in C1 will be 5

copy C1 and paste into C2 and C3

the values in these cells will reflect the values
in A2/B2 and A3/B3, respectively

In this case, each cell stores a *variable*, really,
just a value (though the cell name could be considered
a variable to some degree) and as you replicate the
formula, excell uses it's structure to extrapolate what
it is you're trying to do in each of the new cells.
