i had one jar colonize days ahead of its bretheren, so yesterday i pulled it out and went to dunk it, but i found a few spots on it where it had this...waxy layer that when scratched at came off in one piece...anybody familiar with this? aside from that the cake looked and smelled like it should, and since this is the first time i tried the scratch/dunk/roll thing i've never noticed it before...

He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

yes but it's yellow. aka mycelial piss
maybe there was something inside your jar that stuck to the outside of the myc when you removed the cake?

Probably metabolic waste that dried a little. Seen it before, no worries. No need to remove it next time, but you may want to fruit earlier.

Yellow stuff like that? If so its myco waste. If it was on the bottom it could have settled and stained some of the cake. Usally it starts to happen once its almost 100% finished - at that point, if its bad, I crack the lid and drain the waste. Sometimes to much waste can hinder the growth in the jar.

thats kinda what i thought, but the thing is once the myc. takes over the jar i wait 3 days then fruit. i think its because i dont have a nice warm dark place for them to colonize, so its a result of my method at the moment.
i cant wait to get paid so i can make myself a proper incubation/fruiting chamber.
