what difference does it make if you fan the mushrooms before drying them with desiccant?

Fan will remove most of the moisture, it makes a huge difference. With fan drying, a small box of desiccant can last you a very long time. Without fan drying first, that box would probably last one harvest at most, because it's having to work that much harder to remove extra moisture.

might make the process quicker by taking a lot of moisture out before relying on the desiccant, but that is about it. (although i'm not sure about the timing--never actually timed both possibilities.) as you probably know, there is a limit to how much moisture desiccants can absorb before they need to be "recharged" in the oven. so, fanning first just removes a good part of the majority of moisture, so that the desiccant can finish the job to "cracker dry."

you should try the drying box i made. its simply a tupperware container with a computer fan taped onto the cover and of course a hole for it to draw air through. the fan is sucking air out of the box and just acut the wires so u can tape them to a 9 volt battery

Did you use desiccant in the bottom of the drying box?

dessicants alone are not a practical way of drying mushrooms.
the unfortunate thing is that you will probably not have this burden in abundance for some time.

when you wind up with this problem, go with a dehydrator
(Nesco American Harvest "snackmaster") at least needs an adjustable thermostat with temps below 100F
