    #4104815 - 04/27/05 11:16 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I am going to buy a new computer tomm.I only have $600 or less to spend on the whole thing,monitor,ect....I know thats not alot but right now I am using a 433mhz Gateway so anything is an improvement.I dont know much about computers but the basics so I have several questions:
#1:Should I go to the Local Computer store or a est Buy/Circuit City Type store?Which ones generally have bettter deals?
#2:Can You recomend a system brand and what the minimum specifications I should expect for a computer at that price?
#3:Is it possable to get a good laptop for this price?
It will mostley be used for buisness records/work,and surfing the net.Gaming isnt that important same with downloading music ect..I do that stuff sometimes but not alot.
Thanx for any help you can give me.I dont wanna buy a dinasour iof i can help it.

if you want a prebuilt i've had good experience with compaq. local computer stores usually shop online stores then build it and charge you a couple hundred for there services so i'd say department store if you wanna go that route.

really should build it yourself, then you get exactly what you want. man i'll try and help you in the morn,

theres no way i could build it myself.I have managed to teach myself and do certain simple things like change modems, addd ethernet connection and upgrade memory,ect.. but when it came to something as simple as switching a CD burner with a DVD burner,I ran into a problem,i couldnt figure out how to remove the cd drive from the chasey.I spent 3 hours removing screws and putting them back.Nope i wouldnt be able to build a system.Plus i might have a better warranty.Theres staples, best buy, kmart, walmart, best buy and circuit city in my town, any suggestions?
I thought about maybe trying Tigerdirect or something but i dont know what to shop for.
I though a department store might be a little cheaper.Plus i might be able to qualify for one of those "sign up for one year of aol and get $150 rebate deals"

I usually recommend Dell to people they have good customer service; and i have never had a problem with mine and you can a pretty decent one for $600 i would say; they say laptops start at $600 but i'm sure its prolly a pretty crappy one; but the $600 desktop is prolly a pretty decent one; check them out see if its anything like what you need.

speaking with no more experience than seeing my friends'; you might want to consider a Mac Mini.
