Calling shiitake experts!
    #4104600 - 04/27/05 10:31 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I am a new at this but have been doing alot of reading (including growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms book). Anyhow, I have received some sawdust spawn that I am going to use to inoculate about 20 logs outdoors.
I probably will have plenty left over and was wondering how I might use it to cultivate some shiitakes inside. I know how to make the substrate and sterilize it, but not sure about any of the other details. It's okay if I don't do it perfect this time around (I just don't want to waste the spawn).

Okay, perhaps I should be a little more specific. I have seen these home shiitake kits sold that are basically bags of substrate that you inoculate and grow out the mycellium etc. They come with instructions for watering, misting, fruiting, etc.
Well, I am basically wanting to make my own kit (so to speak). Having the available spawn and substrate, I was wondering if there are any suitable bags available for this (and any other general instructions to pulling this off). I realize that it may not be as successful as the ready bought (because I can't control contamination to the degree the kit makers do etc.) but figured it wouldn't hurt to experiment.

the tricky part is going to be opening and using the sawdust spawn for log inoculation and then hoping you've maintained enough sterility for the remaining spawn to be usable as inoculum.

It would be best to operate in the opposite order. Use the sawdust spawn as inoculum for grains or wood chips or what have you. Shortly thereafter you will want to use the remainder for log inoculation.

Thank you - that makes good sense to inoculate the inside substrate first. Any ideas on what would make a suitable bag? I am going to try and treat with lime water to sterilize (so needing a thermobag isn't an issue). However, dosen't the bag need to be permeable to the outside air?
