Spore Print Making
    #4103613 - 04/27/05 06:49 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

There are many TEK's about making spore prints...
some in aluminium foil, others in paper, others combining both;
Paper spore prints are good for recognizing spore color, but are harder to scrape the spores from and to pasteurize/sterilize.
Aluminium foil are good for pasteurize/sterilize and scrape the spores, but not so good to recognize spores color.
What kind of paper could be used to make spore prints? I read somewhere that we could play with the color of the paper to contrast with the color of the spores; can i use normal paper to do the spore prints? And this type of paper withstands pasteurization/sterilization?
Just want some feed-back from everybody's experience
thanks

I find foil to be nice for forming, it hold shape in the bottom of sterilized jars and keeps it. Plus, it can be sterilized. Personally, I find that foil can be hard to scrape, very easy to tear right through with the needle. Tyvek has a great color/texture, and can be sterilized also. It is more forgiving when it comes time to scraping with a needle. Tyvek doesn't hold a good shape though, if I place it in the bottom of a jar, it takes on whatever shape it wants. This makes it hard to fold properly and quickly, then bag.

Just my .02

Instead of picking/scrape the spore with a needle you should use a loop, this way you don't tear the aluminium foil.
Tyvek sounds good but isn't hard to scrape spores from hit? Tyvek only comes in one color right?! so keep out pale spore prints.

A pain in the ass but it's effective.

Well this is how I like to do it. I like to get my foil ready like this That way when the print is done you have these flaps to fold over.

I then get a half pint jar (wide mouth) and prepare it like this. I ditch the disk and silicone in a tyvek disk. This will allow the cap to dry a little as sits in the jar. (Which causes more spores to drop and prevents the cap from rotting. Will also allow the prints to dry once the mushroom cap is removed.)

Next put in the foil and cover with the lid. Put some foil on top and pc for one hour at 15 psi.

Now uncover and wipe off and your little print chamber is ready.

Now take the jar to your mushroom chamber and loosen the top but don?t remove it.

I like to put a pin in each of the mushroom caps I?m going to print.

Cut the shroom just below the cap and put it on the foil in the jar as fast as you can. Easy to do since the jar lid is loose.

Put it in a glove box or where you like to do your work.

In 24 hrs open up and take out the cap by the pin (now we know what the pin is for) and put the cap back on. Let it sit for 24 hrs again to let the spores dry.

Once dry fold up foil and store in a cool dry place

I hate to clean my print foil with alcohol.

I know how to use a loop, but generally only use a needle to scrape spores. Less tools to sterilize and fool around with.

great pic's, good tek . The only problem is if you want to make a spore print of a bigger mushroom... well just arrange a bigger jar or something .
Myself, i make kind an envelope with the foil (big enough for the print), then make the print almost like you, then close the foil, put inside the foil letter, close, and put inside a zip block bag.
